ESO PvP patch changes — what each update changed for PvP

Every recent Elder Scrolls Online update, read for PvP: the Battle Spirit, Cyrodiil, Imperial City, Battlegrounds, gear set and class changes that matter when you fight players, each linked to the patch notes we read it on. Under each update we add how much PvP players talked about it, counted from a private PvP community while the update was on the test server and in its first two weeks live. Those figures are counts only: no community, channel, person or message is named or quoted.

How to read this page

Each update lists the PvP-relevant lines from its patch notes in our own words, grouped by area. A line marked "confirmed in live patch notes" is in the notes for the version that went live. A line marked "test server value" comes from public test server notes and can still change before it goes live. A line we could not find in official notes would say so in plain words. Every line links to the page we read it on, and numbers are copied exactly; when the notes only say "lower" we say "lower" too. Patch notes cover far more than PvP, so a missing system here means the notes did not change it for players fighting players, not that the update ignored it.

Under each update you also get a measure of interest: how many messages a private PvP community posted in its patch discussion during that update's window, how many different people took part, and which gear sets they named. Across the 4 windows that comes to 3,992 messages. Relative to the length of each window, the busiest was Update 52 at about 24.6 messages a day. We never post or reply there; we only count.

Update 49: what changed for PvP

Test server from January 12, 2026, live on PC on March 9, 2026. 12 confirmed, 0 test server, 0 unconfirmed lines. Full notes: patch notes.

Update 49 was the first wave of the combat refresh, and for PvP it was mostly about Dragonknight and quality of life. Battle Spirit picked up a new rule aimed at stacked heal-over-time builds: once a target carries eight or more of them, its healing received drops by a third. Cyrodiil got faster roads, bigger courtyards at three keeps, and leaderboards that show five hundred names instead of splitting them by class. Battlegrounds brought three-sided matches back for weekend events. The Dragonknight changes carried explicit PvP halving on the new damage buffs, which is the pattern the later updates kept using: one number for PvE, a smaller number against players.

Update 50: what changed for PvP

Test server from April 13, 2026, live on PC on June 8, 2026. 12 confirmed, 0 test server, 0 unconfirmed lines. Full notes: patch notes.

Update 50 is the one that changed how PvP is organised. PvP Veterancy arrived with one hundred ranks, the Vengeance campaign became a full-time option with three times the usual population, and three older campaigns closed so players are concentrated in fewer places. For gear, Rallying Cry and Impregnable Armor moved their bonuses onto Critical Resistance, which only matters against players, at lower values than before. Pets became harder to burst with procs, Northern Storm was split into a PvE value and a much smaller Battle Spirit value, and the Sigil of Imperial Retreat turned into an anti-stealth tool you can use in the middle of a fight.

Update 51: what changed for PvP

Test server from August 3, 2026, live on PC on September 28, 2026. 17 confirmed, 0 test server, 0 unconfirmed lines. Full notes: patch notes.

Update 51 is the biggest PvP balance pass of the year. Battle Spirit now caps damage shields at a share of Max Health that shrinks as the group grows, a direct answer to shield stacking in large groups. Cyrodiil guards were rebalanced, Vengeance abilities hit far more targets, and Alliance Point siege arrived. Battlegrounds folded the two- and three-sided queues into one Big Team Battles queue. On gear, Oakfather's Retribution and Critical Riposte were buffed while Draugrkin's Grip and Maarselok got PvP-specific cuts, and Dragonknight lost some healing and sustain. Slayer and Aegis now count against every monster, which reaches into Imperial City and the guards.

Update 52: what changed for PvP

On the test server since October 26, 2026; no live date has been published yet. 0 confirmed, 10 test server, 0 unconfirmed lines. Full notes: patch notes.

Update 52 is on the public test server now, so every line below is a test value that can change before it goes live. The PvP headline is Jerall Pass, a large three-faction battle space, plus leaderboard rewards that no longer need a home campaign and a Vengeance reset in January. Several sets PvP players watch are being reworked, including Para Bellum and Gaze of Sithis. We will move lines to confirmed when the live patch notes are published.

How we count the talk

Why the changes keep coming in pairs

Read the four updates in a row and one pattern stands out: almost every change that would be too strong against players ships with a second, smaller value that applies only under Battle Spirit or only against players. Northern Storm, Wrathsun, Seething Fury, Draugrkin's Grip, Maarselok and Shattered Paths Signet all follow it, and the damage shield cap in Update 51 goes one step further by scaling with group size. If you theorycraft from tooltips, check which of the two numbers you are looking at. Our PvP mechanics guide explains what Battle Spirit does to damage, healing and shields.

What to do after a PvP patch

When an update goes live, the fastest way to stay competitive is to check three things in order. First, the Battle Spirit lines: they change every build at once, because they touch shields, healing and damage for everyone in Cyrodiil, Imperial City and Battlegrounds. Second, the sets you already wear: open each one on its set page and read the current bonuses, because a PvP-only cut often leaves the tooltip number you remember untouched for PvE. Third, your class: the class lines here only list changes with a PvP angle, so read the full notes for your class too. The talk counts help with a fourth question, what everyone else will be wearing; the sets named most during a test cycle are usually the ones you will meet in the first weeks live.
