ESO PvP Sets — The Questions PvP Players Actually Ask, Answered

These are the set questions that come up again and again among players in a private PvP community: what a set really does, why one set is suddenly everywhere, and which pieces belong together. We grouped duplicates, dropped opinion and banter, rewrote every question in our own words and answered each one from the data we hold. Nobody's message is quoted and no person or group is named. Where a number is in our data we say so; where it is how players tend to use something, we mark it community; where we could not verify it, we mark it unconfirmed.

Why is Rallying Cry the most talked-about PvP set?

Why does every group healer seem to wear Rallying Cry? It sits at number one in our PvP meta ranking with 505 mentions, well ahead of everything else. The reason is in the bonus itself: when your healing critically strikes while Battle Spirit is active, you and group members within 12 meters gain up to 986 Critical Resistance and up to 300 Weapon and Spell Damage for 20 seconds.

Does it stack with itself, and how often can it fire? The bonus can occur once every 15 seconds, and it scales down as more group members are affected: each affected member reduces the Weapon and Spell Damage by up to 15 and the Critical Resistance by up to 50. So a small group gets close to the full value and a large group gets a smaller share each. Because it only works while Battle Spirit is active, it does nothing in PvE content.

Who should wear it? It needs critical heals, so it is a support or healer piece. A damage dealer who barely heals will rarely trigger it. If you are the only healer in a small group, it is one of the few sets that raises both the defence and the damage of everyone near you at once.

How do the crit sets work against players?

How does Mechanical Acuity work, and why is its use falling? Each non-critical hit gives you a stack for 4 seconds, worth 20% Critical Strike chance per stack, at most once every second and up to 5 stacks. When you reach the maximum or the effect ends, it cannot occur again for 25 seconds. It is number two in the ranking with 386 mentions, but its trend is falling: the long lockout makes it a burst-window set rather than an always-on one.

What does Order's Wrath add? A flat 8% to Critical Damage and Critical Healing. It is simple, it never procs and never misses, which is why it shows up steadily in the ranking.

Is there a cap on critical damage? Yes. Our reference data puts base critical damage at +50% and the hard cap at +125% total, so anything past that is wasted. Critical chance comes from Critical rating at about 219 rating per 1%. Against players, the target's Critical Resistance cuts your critical damage, which is why crit sets and crit-resistance sets trade places as the meta moves.

Which monster helms do PvP players run, and what do they do?

What does Maarselok do in PvP? Your melee Heavy Attacks spew a cone of corruption that deals 1492 Disease damage over 4 seconds, increased by 10% for each negative effect on the target, up to 300% against players, at most once every 10 seconds. It scales off your higher Weapon or Spell Damage. Its mentions are rising, which matches the number of heavy-attack builds players ask about.

Why do burst builds pair an ultimate with Balorgh? When you use an Ultimate ability you gain Weapon and Spell Damage equal to the Ultimate consumed, and Physical and Spell Penetration equal to 23 times that amount, for 12 seconds. A big ultimate therefore becomes a burst window with extra penetration.

Is Bloodspawn still worth it for tanks? When you take damage you have a 6% chance to gain up to 13 Ultimate and up to 3731 Physical and Spell Resistance for 5 seconds, at most once every 5 seconds. It is a defensive helm for players who are hit constantly, such as front-line brawlers in Cyrodiil.

What do the PvP-only proc sets actually do?

What does Vicious Death do when I get a kill? When you kill a player they explode for 3322 Flame Damage to all other enemies within 5 meters, scaling off your higher Weapon or Spell Damage. It rewards fights where enemies stand together, and its mentions are rising.

How does Plaguebreak work, and why does cleansing it hurt? Direct damage makes player enemies a Plague Carrier, dealing 1000 Disease damage over 10 seconds and applying the Diseased status effect. If the plague is removed early it explodes and deals extra Disease damage around the target. That is why players ask whether to cleanse it: cleansing ends the damage over time but triggers the burst.

What is Elf Bane for? While in combat it extends the duration of your Flame damage over time abilities by 5 seconds, excluding beams and channels. It is a fire damage-over-time set, ranked 17th.

What does Farstrider do? When you deal direct damage with a Blink, Charge, Leap, Teleport or Pull ability, it lowers the enemy's Critical Resistance by 40% and raises yours by the same amount for 10 seconds. It turns gap closers into a crit-resistance swing, and it is rising.

Mythics, arena weapons and class sets: what is worth asking about?

What does Oakensoul Ring give, and what is the catch? While equipped you cannot swap between your two weapon bars, and in exchange you gain a long list of buffs including Minor Berserk, Minor Courage, Major Brutality, Major Savagery, Minor Force, Minor Protection and Major Resolve. It is sixth in our ranking. The catch is the single bar: every skill and ultimate you want must fit on five slots.

How does Monomyth Reforged split its buffs? While in combat on your front bar you gain Major Force, Minor Berserk and Minor Vulnerability. On your back bar you gain Major Protection, Minor Vitality and Minor Timidity. In practice it gives you a damage bar and a defence bar, at the cost of taking more damage while on the damage bar.

What do the class sets Pyrebrand and Soulcleaver do? Pyrebrand makes your Light Attacks add 836 Flame damage over 6 seconds and ties into fire effects; it is fourth in the ranking. Soulcleaver raises the damage and healing of Siphoning abilities by 15% and cuts their cost by 15% while in combat, and its mentions are rising.

Does War Maiden still matter? It adds up to 600 Weapon and Spell Damage to Magic Damage abilities, so it suits builds whose main damage is Magic.

How do players combine sets, and how is the ranking counted?community

How many sets can I run at once? The usual PvP shape is two 5-piece body sets plus a 2-piece monster helm, or one body set swapped for a mythic. Players describe it as one set that deals damage or procs, one set that keeps you alive or buffs your crit, and a helm that fits your main skill.

Should I copy the number-one set? Not blindly. Our ranking counts how often a set is named in PvP build talk. A set can be named because people complain about it, and support sets such as Rallying Cry rank high because every group asks about them. Read the bonus, then decide if your role triggers it.

How do I know if a set is rising or falling? The ranking compares mentions per message in the last 90 days with the 90 days before. Rising today: Maarselok, Vicious Death, Balorgh, Soulcleaver, Sheer Venom and Farstrider. Falling: Mechanical Acuity, Monomyth Reforged and Aetheric Lancer.

Does Battle Spirit change how sets perform? Yes. Every set's damage and healing lands on a target that takes 50% less damage and receives 55% less healing in PvP, so sustain and burst sets feel different than in PvE. The mechanics guide covers the details.

If you remember three things: Rallying Cry ranks first because it buffs a whole small group from a healer's crits; crit sets fight crit resistance, so read both sides; and every number here comes from our set data and the live PvP meta ranking, so check the set page before you farm.
