The frustration“My crit chance shows as 657 or 21912, not a percent — what does that number even mean?”

A set bonus says “Adds 657 Critical Chance.” Your character sheet shows a four- or five-digit crit number. Nowhere — not the tooltip, not the sheet — does the game tell you what the unit is. It is not a percent. Here's the actual conversion, the base crit everyone starts with, and the one crit cap that genuinely matters, all from our verified reference data.

The straight answer: ≈219 rating = 1% crit

Critical Chance on the sheet is a rating, and at CP160 roughly 219 rating converts to 1% actual crit chance. So that standard “Adds 657 Critical Chance” set line is +3% crit — not 657%. Mother's Sorrow's big 1,528 line? About +7%.

Everyone also starts with a base 10% crit chance before any gear. The sheet's rating number sits on top of that.

The magic number: 21,912 rating = the full 100%

The conversion tops out where rating would push you to 100% total: 21,912. A few worked points on the scale: 2,191 rating ≈ +10% crit, 6,574 ≈ +30%, 10,956 ≈ +50%. There's no artificial cap below the natural 100% — you just can't crit more often than always.

A concrete example from our own datamined numbers: The Thief mundus stone with 7 gold Divines pieces gives 1,984 rating — just about +9% crit chance.

Why such a weird number? You're secretly level 66

The 21,912 constant isn't arbitrary — it falls out of the game's internal formula, which treats a max-level character as level 66, a leftover from the old Veteran Rank system. That's the whole story behind the convoluted scale: the game converts rating to percent through a level term the UI never surfaces, and at CP160 that term makes ≈219 rating equal 1%.

While you're still leveling, the divisor is smaller — so the same rating is worth a bit more percent at low level. Another reason the sheet number seems to drift as you level even when your gear didn't change.

Crit damage is a separate number — and it has a real cap

Crit chance is how often; crit damage is how hard. A critical hit deals +50% damage baseline, and crit-damage bonuses — the Shadow mundus, Minor Force (+10%) and Major Force (+20%), sets, Champion Points — stack on top up to a hard cap of +125% total. Past that, every point is wasted.

This is the cap that actually bites in practice: crit chance has no early ceiling, but well-built characters hit the crit-damage cap without realizing it and keep stacking dead stats.

What to do with all this

Read set tooltips in percent: divide crit-rating lines by ~219. Value crit-chance lines normally until your total (remember the free base 10%) gets high, and watch the crit-damage cap — +125% total — before slotting another Force source or crit-damage CP star. If you want the live conversion table and the rest of the ceilings (penetration target, movement speed), our stat-caps page keeps the verified numbers in one place.

657 crit chance is +3%. 21,912 is 100%. You start at 10% for free, a crit hits for +50% baseline, and crit damage stops paying at +125% total. That's the entire system the character sheet never explains — and every number here is from our verified reference data, not a guess.
