Why Your DPS Is Low in ESO — the 5 real reasons, ranked
Here's the uncomfortable truth ESO never tells you: the game shows you no damage meter at all. You literally cannot see your DPS without an addon — which is exactly why Combat Metrics has been installed over 7 million times. So before you blame your build, understand that most 'my DPS is low' problems are a handful of fixable habits, not your gear. Ranked by how much they actually cost you:
1. You can't see the problem — fix that first
You can't improve a number you can't see. ESO has no native DPS readout, so step one is always: install a combat meter (Combat Metrics is the community standard, ~7M downloads) and parse on a target dummy. The 6-million-health trial dummy is the honest test — it has the buffs a real trial gives you.
Once you can see your number, you can diagnose it. Without that, everything below is guesswork.
- No meter = no diagnosis. Get one before changing anything.
- Parse on the 6M 'trial' dummy, not the bare 21M one, for a realistic number.
2. Light-attack weaving — this is most of your damage
For the vast majority of players, weaving a light attack in between every single ability is the largest gap between bad and good DPS. ESO's combat is built around it: light attack → ability → light attack → ability. Skipping it can cut your damage by a third or more.
It feels clunky at first and then becomes automatic. If you fix only one thing, fix this.
3. Uptimes beat big tooltips
A skill's tooltip number is almost a lie — what matters is how often the effect is actually live. Keeping your damage-over-time effects, your buffs (like Major Courage and Major Slayer), and your enemy debuffs (Major Breach, Major Vulnerability) at high uptime is worth far more than chasing a bigger tooltip.
Most low parses are really an uptime problem: the DoTs fell off, the buff lapsed, the debuff wasn't applied. Track them — see our full breakdown of every buff and where it comes from.
4. Your gear might be quietly fighting youCommunity-reported
Wrong sets, wrong traits, the wrong mundus stone, or no food buff each shave a slice off. None of these is as big as weaving or uptimes, but together they add up. The fastest fixes: make sure you're running a damage food, the right mundus (usually Thief or Shadow for DPS), and gold-quality weapons.
If you're not sure your set choices are current, our Build Generator assembles a full setup with every choice linked to the datamined data behind it.
5. Sustain is capping your damage
If you run out of magicka or stamina mid-fight, you stop doing your rotation — and a paused rotation is zero DPS. Many players over-stack damage and then can't sustain it, so their real-fight damage is far below their dummy parse.
The fix is balance: enough recovery (through food, glyphs, or a sustain set) that you can keep casting for the whole fight, not just the first 20 seconds.
