This page is built from 189 real questions players actually asked about Werewolf on the official ESO forums — not a build-of-the-week opinion piece. We grouped them by theme, answered the distinct ones, and skipped the endless 'give me a bite' duplicates. Where a number comes straight from the skill and set data we hold, we cite it; where it doesn't, we answer honestly and qualitatively.

Becoming a werewolf & getting a bitecommunity

"How do I become a werewolf?" There are two paths: complete the Hircine's Gift quest chain, or get bitten by another player who has the infection. Once infected you visit a Werewolf ritual site to fight through the ritual and gain the skill line.

"Where do I find the werewolf quest / where do werewolves spawn?" Wild werewolves roam specific overland zones (Bangkorai, Reaper's March, and The Rift are the classic ones) during werewolf nights. "How do I know when black werewolves will spawn / is today a werewolf or vampire day?" Spawns run on an in-game day cycle that alternates; community trackers and zone chat are how most players confirm which night is active. We don't hold the exact timer, so treat any fixed number you see elsewhere with suspicion.

"How does werewolf biting work / how do I infect people as a werewolf?" This is the Shadow of the Bloodmoon passive: it "allows you to infect another player with Lycanthropy once every week by returning to the Werewolf ritual site." So biting is on a per-week cooldown, and it's done at the ritual site, not in the open world.

"Why can't I turn someone into a werewolf / why can't I bite them?" The same passive states: "Players already infected with Noxiphilic Sanguivoria cannot be infected with Lycanthropy." If your target is a vampire, the bite won't take. You also need to have waited out your weekly cooldown.

"Can you have a vampire and werewolf bite active at once?" No — the two infections are mutually exclusive, which is exactly why the werewolf bite fails on vampires.

"Do players need to be the same faction to give a bite?" No — the bite is delivered at the ritual site and doesn't depend on alliance. "Vampire vs werewolf bite and how to avoid getting scammed": bites are free to give (the biter loses nothing but their weekly charge), so paying gold for one is optional at best. Guild giveaways are the safe route.

Curing lycanthropycommunity

"How do I cure the werewolf bite / where is the werewolf cure?" Lycanthropy is cured through the priests of Arkay found in the main cities of each alliance's zones — the same NPCs who cure vampirism. There's a modest gold cost and a confirmation dialogue.

"What happens to skill points when cured of werewolf or vampire?" Any skill points you invested in the Werewolf line are refunded when you're cured, so nothing is permanently lost. "Can a cured werewolf become a vampire?" Yes — once cured you're eligible for the other infection, since the block only applies while you're actively infected.

Leveling the Werewolf skill linecommunity

"How do I level werewolf / fastest way to level the transformation?" The Werewolf line levels by earning XP while transformed and by killing enemies in werewolf form. The practical trick players rely on is to transform, kill, and use Devour (from the Insatiable Hunger passive) on corpses to extend your form and keep grinding — areas with dense, fast-respawning mobs are ideal.

"How to level werewolf 1 to 10 fast?" Stay in form as long as possible per transformation. Insatiable Hunger lets you "devour corpses, for up to 4 seconds per corpse" — each second devouring heals you and restores 15 Ultimate, and if you're a Werewolf Berserker each tick also generates Fury. Chaining devours keeps your form alive and your Ultimate topped up.

"Update 50 werewolf leveling questions": leveling mechanics shift between updates. We don't hold patch-specific timing values, so if a guide quotes exact XP-per-kill figures, verify them against your current build before trusting them.

How the werewolf form actually works

"How does werewolf form work / why is werewolf a separate ability bar but vampire isn't?" Transforming swaps you onto a dedicated Werewolf bar with its own kit — that's the design difference from Vampire, which layers passives and a few slottable skills onto your normal bars. "Is Overload like the werewolf ultimate?" Conceptually yes: both are a mode you enter via an Ultimate that replaces your bar.

"Can I use other skills while transformed / can werewolves stealth / why can't werewolves crouch-stealth?" While transformed you only have access to Werewolf-line abilities, and the form cannot crouch-sneak the way a humanoid can — this is a known limitation of the form, not a bug.

"How do I stay transformed / is there a way to exit the form early?" Staying transformed costs resource over time, and Call of the Hunt "reduces the cost of remaining in your Werewolf Transformation by 16%, plus 16% for each transformed werewolf or direwolf in your group, including yourself, up to a maximum of 80%." Grouping werewolves therefore dramatically extends form time. Devouring corpses (Insatiable Hunger) also feeds Ultimate back. To exit early you can let the timer lapse or use the light attack out-of-combat method.

"How does the werewolf ultimate work with the Fury system?" Werewolf Transformation notes: "While transformed and in combat, abilities generate 15 Fury. When you have 1000, this ability becomes Rampage, which increases your damage done by 15%, Movement Speed by 20%, and removes the cost of all Werewolf abilities for 20 seconds." Blood Rage boosts Fury generation — base +10, and the extract shows a current bonus of 15.

"How do I howl / how do werewolves fear enemies?" Transforming itself fears nearby enemies for 3 seconds, and Roar "roar[s] with bloodlust to fear nearby enemies for 4 seconds and set[s] them Off Balance for 7 seconds." Roar also opens the Feeding Frenzy synergy for up to 12 allies (6% damage done and Minor Force).

"How can a werewolf be slower than a human / does werewolf still give stamina bonuses?" In form, Master of the Chase "increases your Movement Speed by 30%" and boosts Heavy Attack Stamina return by 50%, and the Transformation ultimate grants 15% Stamina Recovery while slotted — so a correctly slotted werewolf is fast. If you feel slow, check that Master of the Chase is unlocked (learned at rank 7).

What carries over: passives, gear, procscommunity

"Do werewolves have passives while in human form / does the skill line change your appearance outside form?" The Werewolf passives that affect your werewolf form only apply while transformed; out of form you gain nothing offensive from the line and your appearance is unchanged. The known exception is the poison weakness — see below.

"Do weapon passives / weapon traits / backbar traits carry over in werewolf form? Are werewolf skills weapon abilities? Do enchants and poisons proc? Do werewolf light and heavy attacks proc effects?" These are the most-asked mechanics questions, and the honest answer is that behavior has shifted across patches and the specifics aren't in our data extracts. As a rule of thumb the community relies on: your equipped gear's set bonuses and stats still apply while transformed, but the form uses its own claw attacks rather than your weapon's, so weapon-line passives and weapon enchants generally don't function the same way. Treat proc interactions as build-and-patch dependent and test them.

"Does gear impact werewolf form?" Yes — your set bonuses and base stats carry through. Several sets even scale specifically with the form (next section).

"Does werewolf poison weakness affect you in normal form?" The increased poison damage taken is a property of being a werewolf and is a well-known trade-off of the line; players cite it as active whenever you carry the infection.

"Is it a bug that I lose Ultimate when werewolf wears off / does werewolf bug out in Cyrodiil?" Form-related bugs in PvP have been reported repeatedly on the forums across patches. We can't confirm current status from our data — check the live patch notes before assuming a fix landed.

Gear, sets, and builds

"Does any gear impact werewolf form / what does a werewolf build need?" Four sets in our data directly reward the form. Hide of the Werewolf (Glenumbra overland): its 5-piece is "When you take damage, you generate 6 Ultimate. This effect can occur once every 5 seconds and the Ultimate triples while in Werewolf Transformation." Great for getting into form and staying there.

Salvation (Malabal Tor overland) 5-piece: "Reduces the cost of your Werewolf Transformation ability by 33%. While in Werewolf form, your Weapon and Spell Damage is increased" by a scaling amount — a form-uptime and damage set.

Savage Werewolf (Reaper's March / Moon Hunter Keep) 5-piece: melee-range Light Attacks cause a bleed, "and if you are in Werewolf Transformation, you also gain 6% damage done." This is the go-to damage set for the form.

Shapeshifter's Chain (mythic neck, from fragment leads): "Reduce the cost of your Transformation Ultimate and Werewolf abilities by 15%. While transformed, increase your Maximum Health, Stamina, and Magicka by 1707." "Where is the Chain of the Werewolf lead?" It comes from mythic fragment leads scattered across the game — our data notes the source as fragment leads but not the exact locations.

"What's the best class / race for a werewolf? Redguard vs Bosmer?" Because the form uses its own Stamina-based kit, werewolf performance is more about the form's own passives, sustain, and gear than class identity — which is why players ask about so many classes. Stamina-focused races (Redguard for sustain, Bosmer for stamina and recovery) are the common picks; we don't hold current racial numbers, so pick based on the sustain/damage split you want.

"Is a magicka sorcerer / magicka werewolf mage possible?" The form is fundamentally Stamina-based (most actives cost Stamina; Hircine's Bounty is the Magicka exception). A magicka-stat character can transform but will fight the kit's resource design — stamina builds are the intended path.

"How do I increase DPS / improve my werewolf?" Keep form uptime high (Call of the Hunt, devouring, Hide of the Werewolf), slot Feral Cruelty for its Weapon/Spell Damage and Major Resolve, and pick the Werewolf Berserker ultimate for its Major Berserk and light/heavy-attack bleed when you want single-target damage.

PvE, PvP, and tanking viability

"Can you tank as a werewolf / do werewolf tanks still exist?" The Pack Leader ultimate is the tank-flavored morph: it grants "Major Protection, 15% increased Block Mitigation, and you and group members gain Minor Courage," and summons two direwolves. Its evolved form, Enduring Rampage, adds Health Recovery. Deafening Roar also lets your Gnash taunt while Bracing, so a support/tank werewolf is buildable — though it's a niche pick versus a dedicated tank.

"Are werewolf builds viable for veteran dungeons and trials / welcome in dungeons?" Werewolf can clear veteran content and brings group value through Roar's Feeding Frenzy synergy and Ferocious Roar's Major Courage for the group. Whether it out-parses a class stamina build shifts by patch; it's viable, not always optimal.

"How do werewolves hold up in PvP / is the ultimate viable in PvP?" Feral Cruelty's damage bonus is reduced against Battle Spirit targets (from +25% to +10%), and the form's fear on transform plus high mobility make it a strong burst-and-pressure tool. Deafening Roar adds Major Cowardice and Maim to enemies. It's a real PvP option but very build-dependent.

"How to defeat a werewolf in duels / how to counter one?" Poison damage is your friend (the form's poison weakness), and kiting the fear window while the form's resource drains works — forcing a long fight taxes their form uptime.

Werewolf vs vampire & the honest verdictcommunity

"Is vampire or werewolf better / what's stronger?" They solve different problems. Vampire layers passives and a few skills onto your existing bars with no form swap; werewolf is a full transformation with its own bar, big burst, and high mobility. For a Stamina character who wants a distinct playstyle and a strong Ultimate, werewolf; for a build that wants passive utility without changing bars, vampire.

"Is it worth becoming a werewolf / is it necessary?" Neither infection is required to play or clear content. Werewolf is worth it if you enjoy the transformation identity or want its specific sets and mobility; skip it if you don't want to manage form uptime.

"Is being a werewolf good or bad / pros and cons?" Pros: strong burst, high movement speed, group synergies, self-healing via devour and Hircine's Bounty. Cons: single dedicated bar with no crouch-stealth, poison weakness, and resource drain that ends the form. It's a trade-off, not a straight upgrade.

Odds and ends players kept askingcommunity

"Is it normal for werewolf morphs to reset / how to remake a werewolf without breaking it?" Morph resets are usually tied to respeccing or being cured and re-infected. Use an in-game skill respec shrine to re-morph rather than curing, which avoids losing progression.

"Is there a hidden werewolf crafting station / are there werewolf shrines for player homes?" There's no secret werewolf-only crafting station. Ritual-site cosmetics and furnishings exist as house items in various forms, but treat any 'hidden station' claim as a myth unless you can see it in-game.

"Two questions about looting werewolves / can I get banned for killing werewolves?" Killing hostile NPC werewolves is normal gameplay — there's no ban risk. Player werewolves in PvP zones are fair game under those rules.

"Why isn't the werewolf fur black / how do I become a black or white werewolf?" Fur color comes from cosmetic sources rather than a quest choice; there's no in-game toggle to pick color at infection. "Which NPC werewolves should get the updated model" is a feedback/suggestion topic, not a mechanic.

"How to get the werewolf behemoth verse in Infinite Archive / how to defeat Faolchu solo?" These are specific encounter and Endless Archive questions whose exact drop and mechanic details aren't in our data — we won't guess numbers. Use current encounter guides and verify against the live build.

If you only remember three things: the bite is a weekly ritual-site infection that won't take on vampires, form uptime is everything (Call of the Hunt, devour, and Hide of the Werewolf), and the form's numbers shift between patches — so verify anything time-sensitive against the live game before you commit skill points. Everything cited here comes straight from the skill and set data we hold; where it wasn't in the data, we told you.
