Nightblade in ESO — Every Real Question, Answered
Last reviewed 2026-07-20🎮 Works on console (no add-ons)
This page is built from 508 real Nightblade questions asked on the official ESO forums. We grouped the duplicates, answered the distinct ones, and stuck to what the skill data actually says — where a number changes patch to patch or isn't in our data, we tell you qualitatively instead of inventing it.
Is Nightblade even good right now? (viability questions)community
"Is magicka nightblade viable in pvp and pve" and "is magicka nightblade viable nowadays" — short answer: yes, in both. Nightblade has been a competitive DPS class for years and its class kit (execute, crit stacking, minor vulnerability, self-healing) supports parsing and PvP alike. Exact meta ranking shifts every patch, so treat any 'is it top tier' claim as time-stamped, not permanent.
"Which pve single target class is strongest — arcanist, nightblade or sorcerer?" and "is nightblade better than sorcerer / is magicka sorcerer pve dps on par with nightblades" — these are all the same question, and the honest answer is that single-target rankings between the top DPS classes are usually close enough that player skill and rotation cleanliness matter more than the class pick. Check a current tier list for the live patch; don't build around a screenshot from two updates ago.
"Can other classes match nightblade melee dps" and "can a nightblade have a clannfear pet" — melee DPS parity between classes is normal and expected; no class has a permanent monopoly. And no, the clannfear is a Sorcerer pet; Nightblade's summon is the shade (more on that below).
"Are nightblades overperforming and how to increase damage" — whether a class is 'overperforming' is a balance-of-the-moment claim we won't fabricate. To increase damage, the levers are the same for every Nightblade: weave light attacks, keep your execute and DoTs up, and maintain your crit buffs. The skill-specific how-to is in the DPS section.
Magicka vs Stamina, and which to play
"Should i play a stamina nightblade or magicka nightblade for pve" and "how does magicka nightblade compare to stamina nightblade" — both are strong. The class's signature Grim Focus line works off either bar and grants Major Prophecy and Major Savagery (Spell and Weapon Critical rating +2629) regardless of your resource, so both specs get built-in crit. Pick based on the weapons you enjoy: stamina leans dual wield / bow / two-hander, magicka leans staves and class abilities.
"Can you do both stamina and magicka for nightblade" — you can, but a hybrid usually underperforms a focused build in endgame content because your gear and food have to split. The class passive Magicka Flood raises both Max Magicka and Stamina by 6%, which softens the split, but for parsing you still want to commit to one resource.
"Why cant nightblades convert resources to stamina" — they effectively can, through Siphoning Strikes and its morphs, which convert 4000 Health into Magicka and Stamina (2000 each on the base and Leeching morphs, 2600 each on Siphoning Attacks). That's the class's resource-conversion tool.
"Should i choose magicka nightblade or stamina sorcerer for pve" and "which is better for solo — stamina warden or stamina nightblade" — cross-class comparisons come down to playstyle, not a clear winner. Nightblade brings strong self-healing and an execute; if you want a defining reason to pick it, that's it.
PvE DPS: rotation, gear, and fixing low numbers
"Why is my dps so low on melee nightblade" and "what am i doing wrong with my stamina nightblade" — the most common causes are missing light-attack weaving, dropping your DoTs, and not using your execute. Grim Focus (and morphs) generates a stack on every Light and Heavy Attack (fully-charged Heavy Attacks give two), and at 5 stacks you consume them to fire a spectral arrow — so weaving is directly tied to your class burst.
"Does anyone have a good magicka nightblade dps rotation" and "can you suggest easy magicka nightblade rotations" — the skeleton is: keep DoTs like Swallow Soul (heals you for 35% of damage) and your execute available, maintain Grim Focus stacks by weaving, and use Death Stroke's damage-taken debuff. Death Stroke makes the target take 20% more damage from your attacks for 8 seconds — line up your burst inside that window.
"When should i use terror over crushing weapon" and "is single target or aoe dps more important for a stamina nightblade" — fear (Aspect of Terror / Mass Hysteria) is a control/mitigation tool, not a damage skill; use it for utility. For most PvE, single-target matters most on bosses, but bring at least one AoE (Lotus Fan applies its damage-over-time to groups; Twisting Path ticks 377 Magic Damage per second) for trash.
"What is bis gear / what are the summerset meta pve dps sets" and "which monster set for a magicka nightblade dps" — we won't name a 'BiS' set list because meta sets rotate patch to patch and aren't in our data. The reliable approach: a strong two-piece monster set, a class-agnostic damage body set, and a weapon set matching your resource. Verify against a current-patch guide.
"How much dps can a magicka nightblade do without maelstrom staff" and "what do magicka nightblades average on a 3 million solo parse" — parse numbers depend entirely on gear tier, CP, and skill, so any specific figure would be fabricated. A Maelstrom weapon boosts your spammable's damage but is not required to clear content; you'll lose some DPS without it, not your viability.
Stealth, ganking, and the assassin fantasy
"Can nightblade go invisible and for how long" and "question about nightblade stealth" — yes. Shadow Cloak makes you invisible; the base version costs 0 Magicka but disables your Magicka Recovery while moving (and is half cost while standing still). There's no fixed duration cap in the data — it's gated by your ability to sustain, and any attack against you can break it.
"Which skills reveal a nightblade from cloak" and "question about shadowy disguise nightblade skill" — detection potions and area 'reveal' effects break cloak, and Piercing Mark specifically lets you detect a marked enemy through stealth or invisibility for 3 seconds. Shadowy Disguise is the cloak morph that guarantees your next direct-damage attack Critically Strikes — the ganker's opener.
"Does lotus fan remove stealth before the strike lands" — Lotus Fan is a gap-closer that deals its hit plus 2050 Magic Damage over 5 seconds to the area. Any damage you deal ends stealth, so plan your guaranteed-crit opener (from Shadowy Disguise) as the strike that lands.
"What is a good escape tool for a stamina nightblade bow ganker" and "how do i be the ultimate assassin" — Shadow Image is your escape: it summons a stationary shade and lets you re-cast for free to teleport back to it. Combine cloak + Shadow Image + Concealed Weapon's Minor Expedition (15% Movement Speed while slotted) for the hit-and-vanish loop.
"Is nightblade sneak speed still penalized / is the stealthy passive necessary" — the base sneak-speed penalty is a general game mechanic, not a Nightblade class trait, and the Legerdemain 'Stealthy' passive is an account-wide utility for detection radius. Neither is in our class data, so treat build advice about them as playstyle preference, not a class requirement.
PvP: bombing, dueling, and staying alive
"Is bomb blade viable in no proc pvp" and "would a bomb nightblade work in battlegrounds / why use swords on a bomb nightblade" — bomb builds lean on ultimate-based AoE and negate procs by design, so a no-proc ruleset doesn't kill them; it just shifts the damage onto your own stats. Weapon choice (swords for the damage line) is a stat optimization, not a class requirement.
"Should i use relentless focus on my stamina nightblade in pvp" — Relentless Focus is the stamina Grim Focus morph; it grants the same Major Prophecy/Savagery crit buff and fires a Disease-damage spectral arrow at 4 stacks (one fewer than the other morphs). If you're stamina and want that crit buff plus burst, yes, it's a core pick.
"How to counter magicka nightblades / how can a stamina nightblade win a duel" and "how to beat a magicka sorcerer as a stamina nightblade" — counter-play against a NB means forcing them out of cloak with detection and AoE, and surviving their Death Stroke burst window (20% increased damage taken for 8 seconds). Winning duels is about pressuring their sustain and dodging the guaranteed-crit opener.
"Advice for a tanky magicka nightblade pvp build" and "help squishy stamina nightblade dps what to focus on for pvp" — for survivability, Mirage adds Minor Resolve on top of Major Evasion, Shadow Barrier grants Major Resolve on any Shadow ability cast (longer per Heavy Armor piece), and Dark Cloak heals you each second (more while Bracing). Squishy DPS should slot at least one of these plus a burst-heal.
"What armor traits are best for a stamina nightblade in pvp / is vampire worth it on a stamina nightblade in pvp" — traits and Vampire are playstyle calls, not class mechanics, so we won't prescribe numbers. Vampire's tradeoff is well-known (increased ability cost vs. its passives); test it against your own sustain.
Healing and tanking as a Nightblade
"How do i heal on a nightblade / which heal should a magicka nightblade use" — Nightblade has strong healing tools: Swallow Soul heals for 35% of damage dealt over 10 seconds, Funnel Health spreads healing to 3 allies, Sap Essence heals you and allies (599 base, +20% per enemy hit), and Malevolent Offering / Healthy Offering are burst heals. Soul Siphoner also raises healing done 3% per slotted Siphoning ability.
"What makes a good nightblade healer / how should i build a nightblade healer" — you build around Siphoning: Soul Siphon (the Soul Shred morph) heals for 3600 plus 9384 over 4 seconds and grants Major Vitality (+12% healing received and shield strength). Refreshing Path adds Minor Endurance/Intellect and a heal-over-time corridor. Share the Spoils (upgrading Transfer) feeds the group Magicka, Stamina and Ultimate.
"Is orc nightblade healer a good idea" — race matters far less for a healer than for a DPS parse; play what you have. Any race can heal effectively — the class kit does the heavy lifting.
"How is nightblade as a tank / how will nightblade tank do in hardmodes" and "where to place a compensation buff for nightblade tank" — NB tanks lean on Mark Target (Major Breach, -5948 resistances on the target), self-healing, and Shadow Barrier's Major Resolve. It's a viable tank but has historically been a more niche pick than DK; mitigation tuning changes patch to patch, so verify current numbers before committing to hardmodes.
"Is alkosh necessary on a nightblade tank / do nightblade passives trigger seventh legion" — set interactions like these aren't in our class data, so we can't confirm proc behavior. Test on a dummy or check a current set guide rather than trusting a forum claim.
Class skills people keep asking about
"What does the nightblade skill debilitate do / when to use terror" — Debilitate is a Cripple morph dealing 4785 Magic Damage over 20 seconds and slowing the target 50% for 4 seconds, with a higher chance to apply the Overcharged status. Crippling Grasp instead adds an immobilize. Aspect of Terror and its morphs fear enemies and apply Major Cowardice (-430 Weapon/Spell Damage).
"Question about the nightblade skill dark cloak" and "is nightblade shadow image considered a pet / questions about nightblade shade pets" — Dark Cloak is the healing cloak morph (853 Health/sec over 3 seconds, +150% while Bracing) and does not grant invisibility. Summon Shade morphs create a shade that attacks and applies Minor Maim (-5% enemy damage); it behaves like a temporary summon but scales off you — whether a given set/effect treats it as a 'pet' isn't in our data.
"How to maximize resources from nightblade siphoning strikes" and "do siphoning shadow passives apply on both bars" — Siphoning Strikes and its morphs heal while slotted on either bar; Leeching Strikes heals 1800 and reduces its own next cost 10% per stack (up to 10), while Siphoning Attacks restores 200 Magicka and Stamina per proc. The Executioner passive restores 1000 Magicka and Stamina on a kill within 2 seconds.
"What affects nightblade class skill critical / what does grim focus do" — crit is stacked several ways: Pressure Points gives +438 crit rating per slotted Nightblade ability (2% each), Master Assassin adds crit against flanked enemies, Hemorrhage adds 10% Critical Damage plus Minor Savagery on any crit, and Grim Focus grants Major Prophecy and Major Savagery while slotted.
"Why arent nightblade crowd controls applying immunity / question about nightblade ultimate animation" — CC immunity and animation feel are engine-level behaviors, not class stats in our data, so we won't guess at frame timings. If a CC isn't applying immunity as expected, it's usually a soft-CC (like fear or a snare) that doesn't grant it — only hard stuns do.
Races, leveling, and starting freshcommunity
"What race for a magicka nightblade / best race for magicka nightblade endgame dps" and "is khajiit a good race for stamina nightblade" — race choice is a small optimization, not a make-or-break. High Elf and Dark Elf are traditional magicka picks; Khajiit and Orc suit stamina, and Khajiit's crit synergizes with the class's crit-stacking identity. None of these lock you out of any content, and racials aren't in our data, so check current values before a race change.
"Which weapons for magicka nightblade / best weapons for nightblade" — magicka NBs typically run a destruction or restoration staff and often dual-wield for the damage passive on the back bar; stamina runs dual wield, bow, and/or two-hander. "When did two hander replace bow as bis" is a meta-history question that shifts with patches — both bow and 2H have had their turn, so use the current patch's guidance.
"Need help with a nightblade leveling build / help with nightblade new to game" — while leveling, slot at least one ability from every line you want to raise (they only gain XP while slotted), keep Grim Focus on your bar early for the free crit buff, and use Swallow Soul as a self-healing spammable so solo content stays forgiving.
"Can a nightblade solo / help me die less as a solo khajiit nightblade" and "can a melee magicka nightblade solo maelstrom arena" — yes to all; NB is one of the strongest solo classes thanks to Swallow Soul, Dark Cloak, and Malevolent Offering. Maelstrom Arena is doable on melee magicka but demands clean cloak/heal management. Dying less usually means slotting one dedicated heal and one mitigation tool (Mirage or cloak) instead of going full glass cannon.
"Questions about nightblade builds after a break / should i wait for the update to reconstruct my build" — if a new patch is imminent and you're unsure, wait: reconstructing gear before a balance pass can waste materials. Rebuild on the live patch once the meta settles, and treat any 'this is BiS' post older than the current update as a starting point, not gospel.
