Mundus Stones in ESO — Every Real Question, Answered
Last reviewed 2026-07-20🎮 Works on console (no add-ons)
This hub is built from 35 real questions players actually asked about Mundus Stones on the official ESO forums. We answer the distinct ones with the exact numbers where they exist in the data — and stay qualitative where they don't. No invented stats, no build-list padding.
The basics: how Mundus Stones work
"How do I place / how do I use Mundus Stones?" You don't place them — they're fixed activatable objects in the overworld. Walk up to one and interact with it to receive its blessing. There's nothing to build or slot.
"How long does a Mundus Stone effect last?" It's permanent until you overwrite it. There's no timer — the blessing stays active until you visit a different stone. Only one blessing can be active at a time (the Twice-Born Star set is the sole exception; more on that below).
"How do I remove a Mundus Stone boon / remove all Mundus Stones?" You can't strip a blessing to zero — the way to 'remove' one is to activate a different stone, which replaces it. There is no clear/none option.
"Is there a level limit for Mundus Stones?" There's no level gate on using one — the stones are open-world objects any character can activate. The base bonus value does scale with your level (see the ranking question further down).
"Do Mundus Stone base boons increase with rank?" Yes — the boon value scales as your character levels, so the numbers listed in our tables are the max-level figures. A low-level character gets a smaller version of the same effect.
What each stone actually gives you
Here are the max-level values from UESP (retrieved 2026-07-05), shown as base value then the value with 7 pieces of legendary Divines armor. "What is the Lover Mundus Stone?" The Lover increases Physical and Spell Penetration — 2744 base, up to 4489 with full Divines.
"Is the Shadow Mundus 299 spell damage or 12 critical damage?" Neither figure matches our source. The Shadow increases Critical Damage and Healing Done: 11% base, 17% with full Divines. It's a percentage stone, not a spell-damage stone.
"Is Hardy the Lady Mundus Stone?" No — Hardy is a Champion Point star, unrelated to Mundus. The Lady Mundus increases Physical and Spell Resistance (2744 base / 4489 full Divines).
Quick reference for the rest: Apprentice = Spell Damage (238/389); Warrior = Weapon Damage (238/389); Thief = Weapon & Spell Critical rating (1212/1982); Mage = Max Magicka (2023/3309); Tower = Max Stamina (2023/3309); Lord = Max Health (2225/3639); Atronach = Magicka Recovery (310/507); Serpent = Stamina Recovery (310/507); Ritual = Healing Done (8%/13%); Steed = Health Recovery and Movement Speed (238 and 10% base / 389 and 16% full Divines).
Divines, food, and the numbers that scale your stone
"How much does Mundus affect with no Divines?" You get the base value only — the lower number in every pair above. So the Apprentice with no Divines is 238 Spell Damage, not 389.
"Does the Warrior Mundus Stone affect Divines-trait armor?" It's the other way around — the Divines trait boosts the Mundus, not the reverse. Divines is an armor trait (made with Sapphire) that increases your equipped Mundus Stone's effect. Each legendary Divines piece adds 9.1%, up to +63.7% on all 7 pieces. Quality matters: a base Sapphire is +5.1% per piece, scaling up through Fine (6.1%), Superior (7.1%), Epic (8.1%) to Legendary (9.1%).
"Question about food and Mundus Stones." Food and Mundus are independent systems that simply add together on your character sheet — food gives flat Max stats/recovery, Mundus gives its own boon. Neither replaces the other; there's no special interaction to manage.
"Question about Mundus Stones and stat caps." Mundus can push you toward game caps like anything else. The relevant ceilings from our reference data: Critical Damage hard-caps at +125% total (Shadow, Major/Minor Force, sets and CP all stack toward it — anything past is wasted); on-foot Movement Speed caps at 200%; and penetration has a soft target around 18,200 raw boss resistance, reduced further by group debuffs. Critical chance has no hard cap below the natural 100% (~219 rating per 1%).
Which stone should you use? (DPS)
"Which Mundus Stone should I use / which for damage / which for DPS?" There's no single answer — it depends on where your build sits relative to the caps above. The generic rule: use a stone that pushes an uncapped stat. "Why is Thief the best Mundus Stone for magicka damage dealers?" and "why is Thief the best for damage?" — because when you're already at the critical-damage cap and have penetration handled by your group, extra critical chance (Thief, 1212/1982 rating) tends to convert into more sustained DPS than a stone you'd otherwise overcap with.
"Does anyone still use the Thief Mundus Stone?" Yes — it remains the default for many crit-based DPS builds precisely because crit chance has no early hard cap. Whether it beats the Warrior or Apprentice for your specific setup is build-dependent.
"How close are the main Mundus Stones in DPS?" On paper they're close — Thief (crit), Warrior (weapon damage), Apprentice (spell damage) all feed a damage-focused build, and the winner shifts with your gear, buffs and how much you'd overcap. We won't publish a single 'X% ahead' number because it changes per build; test on a parse dummy for your own setup.
"What is the general rule on Lover versus Apprentice Mundus in PvP?" It's a penetration-vs-damage tradeoff. Lover gives penetration (2744/4489) — valuable when enemies have high resistances you're not otherwise cutting through. Apprentice gives flat Spell Damage (238/389). If your penetration is already sufficient, Apprentice's damage wins; if you're bouncing off tanky targets, Lover helps.
Role- and content-specific stone questions
"Should stamina builds use the Lover Mundus in veteran DLC dungeons?" The generic principle: Lover only helps up to the penetration target. In harder content bosses have higher resistance, so more penetration can be useful — but if your group already strips ~8,000–9,000 resistance (tank/healer debuffs, Crusher, Alkosh) and you supply the rest, extra penetration past the target is wasted. Check whether your solo penetration is actually short before defaulting to Lover.
"Is Thief the only viable Mundus for healers now?" No. Healers commonly weigh the Ritual (Healing Done, 8%/13%) and the Shadow (which also boosts Healing Done, 11%/17%) alongside Thief. 'Only viable' is an overstatement — the right pick depends on whether your healing or your utility/crit matters more for the group.
"Question about the Thief, Lover and healthy constellation." These are three different tools: Thief = crit rating, Lover = penetration, and the 'healthy' idea points at survival stones like the Lord (Max Health). You pick based on what your build is short on, not a fixed ranking.
"What Mundus Stone for a stamina bow Templar / stamina Templar?" The generic stamina-DPS answer applies: Thief for crit if you're not overcapping crit damage, or Warrior for flat weapon damage. Lover only if your penetration is short. We won't hand out a single 'best' number — it's build- and group-dependent.
The Steed and PvP stones
"Is the Steed Mundus only for PvP?" No, but it's most popular there. The Steed gives Health Recovery and Movement Speed (238 and 10% base / 389 and 16% with full Divines). The speed is useful anywhere mobility matters, but many PvE DPS prefer a damage stone.
"Does 0.4 on the Steed Mundus increase speed?" We don't have a 0.4 figure in our data. The Steed's movement bonus is 10% base, up to 16% with full Divines. Remember on-foot speed caps at 200% total and stacks additively with things like Swift jewelry (up to +7%/piece) and Major Expedition (+30%) — so the Steed's contribution only helps if you're under that ceiling.
"Does the Shadow Mundus work in CP Cyrodiil?" Yes — Mundus Stones function in Cyrodiil, and the Shadow's critical-damage bonus counts toward the +125% cap the same as in PvE. Note critical damage is reduced against players by Battle Spirit, so its value is lower in PvP than on a dummy. Also worth knowing: the Lord is the only stone not found inside Cyrodiil.
Twice-Born Star: running two stones at once
"Is Twice-Born Star still good with the buffed Mundus Stones?" It can be — the whole point of the 5-piece is that you get two Mundus boons at once. Whether that beats a single stone plus a stronger 5-piece set is build-dependent, but stronger stones make running two of them more attractive, not less. Twice-Born Star is a Craglorn crafted set (2pc Max Health, 3pc Max Stamina, 4pc Max Magicka, 5pc two Mundus boons).
"Which Mundus Stones for Twice-Born Star?" You activate two stones the same way you'd activate one — visit two different stones and both stick. Common pairings stack a damage stone (Thief/Warrior/Apprentice) with a utility or second damage stone; pick two that both push uncapped stats.
"How do I know which Mundus Stones are active with Twice-Born Star / how do I know which are active?" Check your character sheet buff bar — active Mundus blessings show as buff icons. With Twice-Born Star equipped you'll see two Mundus buffs listed instead of one.
Gifting, missing stones, and edge cases
"Can I gift crafting stations and Mundus Stones?" Mundus Stones aren't items — they're world objects, so there's nothing to gift. Crafting stations are a separate gifting question outside this data set; treat that as unrelated to Mundus.
"Where are the new Mundus Stones?" Per our source, no DLC zones contain any Mundus Stones whatsoever — even Western Skyrim, which had Standing Stones in the single-player Skyrim, has none in ESO. All usable stones are in the base-game/Craglorn overworld.
"Can Trial by Fire save the second Mundus Stone / can Trial by Fire keep a second stone?" We have no data tying Trial by Fire to Mundus behavior. The only in-game way to hold two Mundus boons at once, per our source, is the Twice-Born Star set — treat other claims as unverified.
One more gotcha: there are three unmarked, broken Mundus Stones in Craglorn (Lord, Lady, Steed) tied to the quest 'The Corrupted Stone'. Those cannot be used to change your blessing — they're quest set-dressing, not functional stones.
