We mined 144 real questions ESO players asked about enchanting and glyphs on the official forums, grouped them by theme, and answered the distinct ones. Where an exact number exists in our data it's cited; where it doesn't, we answer qualitatively rather than invent a stat.

The basics: how glyphs are made

"How do I enchant / how do I use glyphs?" A glyph is applied at any Enchanting station: open the station, pick the item, and slot a compatible glyph. Weapon glyphs go on weapons, armor glyphs on armor, jewelry glyphs on rings and necklaces — they are not interchangeable.

"How do I craft this glyph / how do I make this glyph?" Every glyph is built from exactly three runes: a Potency rune, an Essence rune, and an Aspect rune. Combine one of each and you get a glyph.

"How do item levels and potency runes work / which potency runestone do I need?" The Potency rune does two things: it sets whether the glyph increases or reduces a stat (additive potency like Okori = an 'increase' glyph; subtractive like Deni = a 'reduce' glyph), and it sets the glyph's level requirement. The top gold-worthy tier requires the CP160 potency runes (Rejera, Repora, Jehade, Itade), which you can only use after the Potency Improvement passive at Enchanting level 50.

"What is the recipe for the jewelry multi glyph / how do I make Increase Physical/Magical Harm?" Those Weapon/Spell Damage jewelry glyphs use the same three-rune formula — a specific Potency + Essence + Aspect combination. We list values below, but the exact rune names for each glyph are catalogued at UESP and ESO-Hub (linked in sources); we won't guess rune spellings we can't verify.

"Where to find Rejera and Repora glyphs / which aspect rune, what is Kuta?" Rejera and Repora are Potency runes (the CP150/CP160 tier), not finished glyphs. The Aspect rune sets quality: Ta (white/Normal), Jejota (green/Fine), Denata (blue/Superior), Rekuta (purple/Epic), Kuta (gold/Legendary). Kuta is the gold Aspect rune everyone hunts for.

Why your glyph won't apply (the 'can't enchant' cluster)

"Can't enchant my jewelry / why can't I use jewelry glyphs / why can't I enhance my jewelry with a weapon damage glyph?" Almost always a type mismatch or level. Jewelry only accepts jewelry glyphs — a weapon damage weapon glyph will never fit a ring. Check the glyph's item type and that its level requirement is at or below your gear's level.

"Why are some glyphs red and unusable / why are some greyed out or locked?" A red or greyed glyph means its level requirement is higher than the item you're trying to enchant, or it's the wrong item type. Lower-level gear can't hold a higher-level glyph.

"Why can't I enchant gear I created / can't apply crafted enchantments to crafted armor / why can't I enchant my Huntsman leash?" Two common causes: the glyph outlevels the item, or the item simply can't take that glyph type. Named/quest items and some special pieces have fixed enchantments — see the quest-gear question below.

"Can I add a Stamina Recovery enchantment to set quest gear / can you put a second enchantment on items?" You can re-enchant most gear, replacing its current glyph with a new compatible one — but you can't stack two glyphs on one item; a new glyph overwrites the old. Some quest-reward items have locked enchantments you can't change at all.

"Why can't I use the Enchanting table / where is the Enchanting station in Davon's Watch?" You need to be at an actual Enchanting station (they exist in most towns and are also part of crafting halls). Davon's Watch has crafting stations; if you can't interact, confirm you're at the enchanting one specifically and not a smithing bench.

Reading glyph tooltips: what the numbers mean

"What does 'for 5 seconds' mean on a glyph?" It's the effect's duration. Crusher, for example, reduces the target's Physical and Spell Resistance for 5 seconds after it procs — you have that window before it expires or re-triggers.

"How do glyph damage tooltips work / how do glyph calculations work?" The tooltip shows the effect at the glyph's level and quality. Our data lists top-tier (CP160) Gold values: a Gold CP160 Glyph of Flame or Poison deals 2045 damage, Frost/Shock/Disease (Foulness) deal 1948, and the Weapon Damage (Berserker) glyph grants +268 Weapon & Spell Damage for 5s. Lower level or quality scales these down.

"Why do self-made glyphs have different values / why aren't identical glyphs stacking / why do identical glyphs show different prices?" Two glyphs that look the same can differ by level and Aspect quality. A CP160 Gold Glyph of Health and a level-20 white one are different items with different values — that's also why vendor 'duplicates' list at different prices, and why they won't stack in your inventory.

"Are Major, Greater, and Grand enchantments supposed to have identical values?" Those are older-era naming tiers. Values are driven by the item level and the Aspect rune quality, not the word in the name — compare the actual number in the tooltip, not the label.

"What comes after Major glyphs / what does 'Truly Superb Glyph of Poison' do?" The prefix words (Petty, Slight, Minor, Moderate, Major, Superb, Truly Superb, and so on) scale with the glyph's level band. 'Truly Superb Glyph of Poison' is just a high-level Poison weapon glyph — a top CP160 Gold version deals 2045 Poison Damage per our data.

"How do I use Petty Glyph of Health / what is required to use Petty Glyph of Enchanting?" 'Petty' is the lowest level band. Petty Glyph of Health is a low-level armor glyph — slot it on low-level armor at an enchanting station. (There's no 'Glyph of Enchanting'; if you mean a rune labelled 'of Enchanting', that's likely mislabelled in-game text or a translation quirk — check the item type.)

Armor, weapon, and jewelry glyph values

"Questions on armor glyphs and how to best apply them / are my armor glyphs not scaling up?" Big pieces (Chest, Legs, Head) get the full value; small pieces (Shoulders, Hands, Waist, Feet) get only 40%. So a CP160 Gold Glyph of Health is +954 Max Health on a big piece but roughly +382 on a small one. If your small-piece glyphs 'look weak,' that's why — it's intended.

"Do apparel effects stack / do defense glyphs give immunity to the secondary effect?" Multiple resistance glyphs across pieces add up, but each glyph only grants its listed stat — a resistance glyph gives resistance, not immunity to that element's status effect. There's no hidden immunity rider.

"What are good enchantments for daggers / best enchantment for staff damage / how do dual-wield enchantments work?" On weapons the go-to offensive choices are the flat elemental glyphs (Flame/Poison at 2045, others at 1948 Gold CP160) or the Weapon Damage/Berserker buff. Crucially, both dual-wield weapons share one enchant cooldown — the same glyph on both blades can't double-proc, so many players run two different glyphs.

"How does the Absorb Stamina weapon glyph work / how do enchantments on swords proc?" On-hit weapon glyphs fire when you land a qualifying attack. Absorb Stamina deals 1461 damage and restores 272 Stamina at Gold CP160 (Absorb Magicka is the same with Magicka; Absorb Health deals 1461 and restores 675 Health).

"How to use Glyph of Prismatic Onslaught / what does Prismatic Defense do?" Prismatic Onslaught (weapon) deals 1461 Magic Damage and restores 338 Health plus 136 Magicka & Stamina — a hybrid sustain glyph. Prismatic Defense (armor, tank-oriented) adds Max Health, Magicka, and Stamina all at once (+367/+334/+334 at Gold CP160 big piece).

The Infused trait, cooldowns, and gear upgrading

"Does the Infused weapon trait work on the Oblivion damage glyph / how does Infused affect glyphs?" Infused boosts the item's enchantment by a quality-dependent amount and gives weapons a flat −50% enchant cooldown. Jewelry Infused is the strongest boost (+60% at Gold), which is why an Infused jewel plus a strong damage glyph is a min-max staple. Whether it scales the Oblivion (Decrease Health) glyph's percentage isn't in our data, so we won't state a number.

"How long is the cooldown on Glyph of Weapon Damage / do same-type damage glyphs share cooldown across bars?" All on-hit weapon glyphs share one internal cooldown — only one fires at a time. The cooldown is community-reported at roughly 9–10 seconds (not in the official data), and the Infused trait halves it on that weapon.

"Do I enchant before or after upgrading / does the enchant quality upgrade when you upgrade gear / does enchanting get better as you level?" Improving an item's material quality (with Kuta etc.) raises the item, but the glyph's strength is set by the glyph's own quality and level — upgrading the item does not upgrade the glyph. Enchant with a gold glyph directly for the top value.

"Does deconstructing a gold enchant give a gold item / can you disenchant items / difference between upgrading with legendary and normal glyphs?" Deconstructing a glyph returns runes (and enchanting XP), not the finished glyph back. There's no 'disenchant to recover the glyph' — replacing a glyph destroys the old one. To end up with a Gold glyph you craft it with a Kuta (Legendary) Aspect rune from the start.

"Is there a way to see if an armor item has a glyph applied / what enchantment level is on it?" Hover the item: an applied glyph shows as an enchantment line in the tooltip. There's no separate 'glyph inspector' beyond the tooltip in the base game.

Are specific glyphs worth it? (the DPS/PvP cluster)

"Is the Crusher glyph worth it for DPS / can Crusher stack with Major or Minor Fracture?" Crusher reduces the target's Physical and Spell Resistance by 1247 for 5s (Gold CP160). It works as penetration and stacks with Breach/Fracture debuffs — but penetration only helps up to the target's resistance (~18,200 raw on a typical boss). In a group where the tank/healer already strip ~8,000–9,000, Crusher can be redundant; solo or in under-penetrated groups it shines.

"What is the best weapon glyph for instant damage / is a Shock glyph worth it on stamina dual-wield?" For a flat hit, the elemental glyphs (Flame/Poison 2045, Shock/Frost/Disease 1948 at Gold CP160) deliver instant damage on proc. On a stamina DW build, an elemental glyph is fine damage, but many stamina players pick Poison or a Berserker/Weapon Damage glyph — element choice matters mainly for status-effect and set synergies.

"How does Glyph of Hardening work / how to proc it / can you combine it with Glyph of Bracing/Shielding?" Hardening grants a damage shield (2911 at Gold CP160) for 5s when the weapon glyph procs on a hit. Hardening is a weapon glyph; Bracing (formerly Glyph of Shielding) is a jewelry glyph reducing block cost — they're different slots, so yes, you can run both on the same character.

"Does Glyph of Bashing increase Power Slam damage / can you combine Bashing with Shielding?" Bashing adds +422 Bash Damage (Gold CP160) to your bash attacks. Whether it feeds a specific morph like Power Slam isn't in our data, so we won't claim it. Bashing (jewelry) and Bracing (jewelry) occupy the same slot type — you can only have one jewelry glyph per piece.

"Do the Mending set and Glyph of Weakening stack / question about Glyph of Weakening?" Weakening reduces the target's Weapon & Spell Damage by 268 for 5s (Gold CP160). It's a debuff on the enemy; set effects like Mending are separate systems, so they don't conflict — but we don't have Mending's numbers to state a combined result.

"Which glyph is better for stamina sustain / are cost-reduction glyphs bad?" For sustain, Reduce Feat Cost (jewelry) cuts Stamina cost of abilities by 154, and Stamina Recovery jewelry adds +121 recovery. Cost-reduction glyphs aren't 'bad' — they're strong when you're cost-capped — but note they don't work with abilities that drain their cost repeatedly over a channel.

Set procs, class synergies, and edge casescommunity

"Can glyphs trigger set procs / can a Shock glyph proc Ilambris via Templar skills?" Glyph procs count as damage and can contribute to on-damage or on-status-effect set conditions in many cases, but interactions are set-specific and have changed across patches. We don't have proc-eligibility data per set, so treat this as build-testing territory rather than a guaranteed yes.

"Are Weapon Damage glyphs damage over time?" No — the Weapon Damage (Berserker) glyph is a timed buff (+268 Weapon & Spell Damage for 5s), not a DoT. The elemental glyphs are single-hit direct damage, not ticking effects.

"What happens when a staff set enchant is replaced with a glyph / is there a way to replicate the Necromancer staff effect?" Replacing an item's enchantment overwrites whatever glyph was there; a fixed 'set' enchantment on a special weapon may be locked and non-replaceable. There's no standard glyph that reproduces a unique named-weapon effect — those are item-specific.

"Question about Sorcerer weapon glyph mechanics / does Glyph of Potion Speed actually work?" Class abilities that count as weapon attacks can proc weapon glyphs, but this varies by ability and morph. Glyph of Potion Speed reduces the cooldown of potions below the item's level — it works, but only for potions lower level than the glyph, which limits its usefulness at endgame.

Leveling enchanting fast (the biggest question cluster)

"How do I level enchanting / help leveling enchanting / fastest way solo / beginner's guide?" Enchanting levels by two actions: crafting glyphs and, especially, deconstructing glyphs (yours or looted). The classic method is to craft the cheapest possible glyphs and immediately deconstruct them for XP. The skill line has 50 ranks and needs 3,667,895 total XP to max — so plan on volume.

"Which aspect rune is most economical to level enchanting / the enchanting leveling trick?" The cheapest Aspect rune (Ta, white) makes the cheapest glyphs to mass-produce and deconstruct, keeping cost per XP low. Deconstructing glyphs you didn't craft yourself typically yields the most XP, so hoard looted glyphs for decon.

"Why is my enchanting worse now that I'm level 50 / why is enchanting so hard to level?" It isn't worse — the XP curve steepens at higher skill ranks (later ranks each need 100k–211k XP versus a few thousand early on), so progress just feels slower. The key passives also gate power: Aspect Improvement (Legendary runes) unlocks at level 31 and Potency Improvement (CP150/CP160 glyphs) at level 50.

"Does the enchanting leveling trick work on one account / is the level-28 skill gain bug fixed / will removing veteran ranks make enchanting critical?" Deconstruction leveling is a normal mechanic, not an exploit, and works on any character. We don't have data confirming a specific level-28 bug's status, so we won't state it's fixed. Level scaling long ago replaced veteran-rank gear, which is why old 'VR15/VR14 glyph' questions no longer apply — everything tops out at CP160.

"Are enchanting hirelings worth it?" The Enchanter Hireling passive (level 32) sends you runestones daily with a better chance at Essence and better Aspect runes — free mats for both leveling and crafting, so yes, take it. Keen Eye: Rune Stones (level 14) also makes world runes easier to spot within 40m.

"Best way to level enchanting, alchemy, and provisioning together / are they worth it?" All three level off crafting daily writs, which is the most efficient way to keep them progressing while earning materials and gold. Combine hirelings + writs + deconstruction and the crafts level in the background of normal play.

Runes, writs, buying glyphs, and money

"What areas to search for runes / why are enchanting nodes so rare / why is it hard to find glyphs for deconstruction?" Runes spawn as world nodes across every zone; the Keen Eye passive helps you see them at 40m. If you feel short on decon fodder, buy cheap glyphs from guild traders or run hirelings — you don't have to farm every rune yourself.

"Where can I find Oko / where to buy return-magicka glyph / where's the best place to buy glyphs?" Individual runes and finished glyphs are sold by other players via guild trader kiosks (the main marketplace) and, for basic glyphs, some enchanting merchants. Named-tier and CP160 glyphs are overwhelmingly a guild-trader purchase.

"Are there enchanting glyphs you can't buy and must craft?" In practice the strongest, up-to-date CP160 Gold glyphs are made by crafters (or bought from crafters via traders); many niche or top-tier combinations simply aren't stocked by NPC vendors, so crafting or the player market is the route.

"What are the requirements for enchanting Master Writs / where do I deliver a writ / what level enchanting for Belkarth writs?" Master Writs (an exclusive contract for a powerful glyph) come from completing regular crafting writs once your skill is high enough to be assigned that tier; you turn writs in at the writ board / crafting turn-in in writ hub cities. To take enchanting writs in Craglorn hubs like Belkarth you need enchanting leveled enough to be given max-tier writs.

"Do new alchemy/enchanting/provisioning recipes drop from the highest pre-DLC writs?" Our data doesn't cover writ reward tables, so we won't assert which recipes drop where — check current patch notes or a writ-reward reference for that.

"Which runes are worth selling / do glyphs and enchanting mats sell well / what is the best way to get Hakeijo?" Aspect runes like Kuta command the highest prices, and finished CP160 Gold glyphs sell steadily since every endgame set piece wants one. We don't have market prices in our data, so treat 'best profit' as market-dependent. Hakeijo (the Prismatic essence rune) is notoriously scarce; we don't have a confirmed farm source in our data to cite.

"What is the price of legendary glyphs / do glyphs sell for anything decent?" Prices float with the player economy and aren't in our dataset — we won't quote a gold figure. Broadly, Gold CP160 combat glyphs hold value because demand is constant; low-level white glyphs sell for little.

"What is the best addon for clothing and enchanting crafts?" Our enchanting data doesn't rank addons — see our dedicated addons guide for the crafting/writ helpers players actually use.

If your glyph won't apply, it's almost always a level or item-type mismatch — check that first. If you're leveling, craft-and-deconstruct cheap white glyphs, take the hireling at 32, and run daily writs. And where we didn't quote a number, it's because it wasn't in our verified data — we'd rather say 'market-dependent' than make one up.
