This hub is built from 392 real Dragonknight questions mined from the official ESO forums, grouped into the themes players actually keep raising. Where a specific number exists in our skill data we cite it; where builds shift patch to patch, we answer the durable mechanic instead of a soon-stale spreadsheet. Nothing here is invented — if we don't have a figure, we say so.

What a Dragonknight actually is

"What are Dragonknights?" and "what is the deal with Dragonknights?" — Dragonknight is one of ESO's original classes, built around three skill lines: Ardent Flame (fire damage and damage-over-time), Draconic Power (defensive and control tools), and Earthen Heart (buffs, shields, and sustain). Its identity is fire DoTs, heavy armor durability, and enemy control.

"What role is Dragonknight considered?" and "are Dragonknights good for anything besides tanking or stamina DPS?" — DK is a strong tank, a capable stamina or magicka DPS, and it can heal. It is best known for tanking because of its blocking passives and self-heals, but it is not locked to that role. "Can a Dragonknight be a healer?" Yes — Hearthfire heals allies for 434 Health per second and grants Minor Fortitude and Minor Heroism, and Cauterize heals up to 6 allies for 1199 every 3 seconds while granting Major Prophecy/Savagery, so healer builds exist even if templar/warden are more common picks.

"What are Dragonknight wings?" and "what skill is pop wings?" — Wings is Wing Buffet and its morphs. It knocks back and stuns nearby enemies and reduces projectile damage taken by 50% for 6 seconds. "How to recognize a Dragonknight with a reflect" and "when did Dragonknight scales stop reflecting projectiles?" — the old Reflective Scales fully reflected projectiles; that behavior was changed years ago to damage reduction. In the current data, Wing Buffet reduces projectile damage by 50% rather than reflecting it, so treat 'DK reflect' as a legacy term.

Skills, morphs, and how the kit works

"Question about Dragonknight skills" and "can Dragonknights slam?" — the class does not have a generic 'slam,' but it has the whip spammable (Lava Whip / Molten Whip / Flame Lash), Searing Strike DoTs, and Dragonfire Breath. "Which is better, Venomous Claw or Noxious Breath?" Those are the stamina morph flavors of Searing Strike (Searing Claw) and Dragonfire Breath (Disintegrating Dragonfire) — the claw is a ramping single-target DoT while the breath is a cone that can also apply Major Breach. Pick claw for pure single-target, breath when you want the debuff or cleave.

"Help with Dragonknight Obsidian Shield morphs" — Obsidian Shield gives a group damage shield plus Major Mending (16% healing done). Fragmented Shield scales the shield off your higher of Max Magicka or Stamina (capped at 31% of Max Health) and is the usual DPS/healer pick; Igneous Shield gives you personally a much bigger shield (3824 vs the group's 1322) and is the tank pick.

"How does Dragonknight Petrify work?" — Petrify snares for 1 second, then stuns for 4 seconds (8 against monsters) and applies Minor Breach. The stun cannot be blocked. Fossilize adds a 4-second immobilize after the stun plus Minor Vulnerability; Shattering Rocks adds damage and a self-heal. "Is Obsidian Shard an immobilize ability?" That's Dark Talons — Dark Talons and its morphs immobilize enemies for 4 seconds, so 'shard' is likely a mix-up with Talons.

"How does the Cauterize morph work?" — Cauterize turns Inferno into a heal aura: it heals you or nearby allies for 1199 every 3 seconds while slotted, and like all Inferno morphs it grants Major Prophecy and Savagery (2629 crit rating) on either bar. "How does the new Dragonknight Inferno work?" — the base and Incinerate morphs pulse flame damage every 5 seconds while giving the same crit buff.

"Why put Major Expedition on Dragonknight chains?" and "why is Dragonknight Chains not dodgeable but Silver Leash is?" — Chains of Flame and its morphs state directly that the attack cannot be dodged or reflected, which is a class perk. Chains of Devastation pulls you to the enemy and grants Major Berserk and Major Evasion — the speed/positioning is why gap-closer morphs are valued. "What gap closer for stamina Dragonknight?" Chains of Devastation is the class option; many stam builds also use a weapon-line charge.

Passives that explain 'how DKs do so much damage'

"How does Dragonknight do such high damage?" and "how does Dragonknight do such high damage?" — a big part is passives stacking. World in Ruin increases area and over-time damage by 7%, Landslide gives up to 10% more damage from repeated hits, and Fan the Flames boosts Burning chance by 50% and its damage by 25%, scaled by how many DK abilities you slot. "Do magicka Dragonknight abilities count as DoT or direct damage?" — a mix: whips and breath's initial hit are direct, while Searing Strike, Burning Embers, and the breath's tail are DoTs.

"Does Searing Heat increase Venomous Claw poison damage?" — there is no passive named Searing Heat in the current data; the relevant Ardent Flame passive is Traumatic Burns, which makes targets take 5% more Flame Damage after you hit them with an Ardent Flame ability. Since claw morphs deal Flame Damage, that debuff applies. "Do the poison Dragonknight abilities look different?" — stamina/poison morphs are cosmetic reskins of the fire animations; mechanically they're the same skills.

"Question about the Dragonknight Combustion passive" — Combustion restores 225 Magicka and Stamina whenever you apply Burning, once per second. That's a core sustain engine for both stamina and magicka DKs that lean on fire. "How does off balance affect magicka Dragonknight?" — hitting an Off Balance enemy with the whip grants stacks that power up your next Volcanic/Power Lash; Mountain Giant also applies Off Balance on fully-charged Heavy Attacks and restores 1430 Stamina.

"Does the Ruffian passive work for a magicka Dragonknight?" — Ruffian is a weapon (Dual Wield) passive, not a class one, and it keys off stunned/off-balance/immobilized targets rather than your resource pool, so it can apply regardless of magicka or stamina spec if you meet its conditions. "When is magicka Dragonknight getting an execute?" and "why did ZOS remove the Dragonknight finisher?" — execute availability has changed across patches; our data doesn't list a current class execute, so verify against the live patch notes rather than trusting an old thread.

Damage-dealer builds and DPS questionscommunity

"Help with a Dragonknight build," "looking for a Dragonknight build," and the dozens of near-identical requests — the generic answer: pick a resource identity (stamina or magicka), run five medium (stam) or five light/heavy hybrid (mag) armor pieces, slot your class DoTs on the back bar, keep a spammable and Molten/Igneous buff up, and use two damage sets plus a monster set. Specific set names rotate every patch, so we won't pin stale ones as 'best.'

"Why am I doing so little DPS as a stamina Dragonknight?" and "why is my magicka Dragonknight's spell power so low?" — the usual culprits: missing Major Brutality/Sorcery (Molten Weapons grants both at 20% Weapon and Spell Damage), letting DoTs fall off, not keeping penetration up, and skipping crit buffs like Inferno's Major Prophecy/Savagery. Fix uptime before you chase gear.

"How to push magicka Dragonknight DPS to 100k?" and "help with magicka Dragonknight rotation to reach 25k DPS" — these are different tiers of the same skill: DoT uptime, light-attack weaving, and resource management. 25k is achievable with tight DoT maintenance and Combustion sustain; 100k is a group-buffed trial parse number that depends heavily on the current patch's sets and mundus, so treat any fixed rotation as patch-specific.

"Which is better, Venomous Claw or Noxious Breath" for stamina, "is two-handed good for Dragonknight," "is Maelstrom dual wield good for stamina Dragonknight," "what gap closer for stamina Dragonknight" — DK stam DPS traditionally leans dual wield or two-handed for the weapon DoTs and heavy attacks, with Chains of Devastation as the class gap closer. "Why do stamina Dragonknights use Stone Giant in Vateshran?" — Stone Giant is a Warden skill, not a DK class skill; it appears on cross-class stam builds via subclassing/weapon setups, so its use is about the skill's stacking debuff, not the class. Confirm current subclassing rules before relying on it.

Tanking: the role DKs are famous for

"Help with a Dragonknight tank build" and "how do I make a Dragonknight tank for PvP and PvE?" — the class was built for it. Burnished Scales increases blocked damage by 10%, Heart of Stone adds 2974 Armor, and Resolute Defense ramps your block mitigation up to an extra 30% while giving a chance to restore 500 Stamina on block. Slot a taunt, a shield, self-heals, and control.

"How do Dragonknight tanks heal themselves in veteran boss fights?" and "how does Coagulating Blood work on Dragonknight?" — Dragon Blood is the answer. Coagulating Blood is the older name for the Dragon Blood line; it heals for 4132 Health scaling off Max Health, up to 50% stronger the lower your Health, and grants Major Fortitude. Green Dragon Blood adds Major Endurance and Minor Vitality for sustain and stronger incoming heals.

"Why use Fiery Grip on a Dragonknight tank?" — Fiery Grip is a Chains of Flame morph name; Chains taunts for 15 seconds if the target isn't already taunted, applies Major Cowardice (-430 Weapon/Spell Damage), and cannot be dodged or reflected — ideal for pulling adds and softening bosses. "How to counter Dragonknight talons" — Dark Talons immobilizes for 4 seconds; break free or use snare/immobilize immunity (Fleetstep Wings grants exactly that).

"What makes Dragonknight better than Warden at tanking?" and "are Nord Dragonknights still the best tanks?" — DK's block passives, chains, and self-heal package are the classic argument; whether it beats Warden shifts with balance patches, so we won't call a permanent winner. Nord is a durable, popular tank race for its resistances and Ultimate generation, but 'best' depends on the current patch and your group. "Why doesn't Dragonknight get Major Resolve from Spiked Armor morphs on the back bar?" — Earthspike Mantle grants Major Resolve while active for 20 seconds; buffs from an unslotted bar persist until they expire, so keep the timer refreshed rather than expecting a passive aura.

Sustain, stats, and resources

"What am I missing with Dragonknight sustain?" and "how to sustain magicka in heavy armor on a Dragonknight" — lean on your class engines. Combustion restores 225 Magicka and Stamina per Burning application (once/sec), The Storm Voice returns Health/Magicka/Stamina per Ultimate spent (more per DK ability slotted), and Core of Flame restores 15% of missing Magicka and Stamina every 2 seconds over 4. Slotting more DK abilities directly boosts Storm Voice and Fan the Flames.

"How much stamina recovery for a stamina Dragonknight?" and "what are good stats for a magicka Dragonknight?" — our data doesn't set target recovery or resource numbers, and correct values depend on content and CP, so we won't invent a figure. The durable advice: recovery matters less in group content (you get buffs and synergies) and more in solo/PvP where you can't count on outside sustain.

"How do Dragonknight tanks manage magicka resources?" — tanks lean on block-cost returns (Resolute Defense's 500 Stamina chance), Ultimate-based Storm Voice returns, and heavy attacks (Mountain Giant restores 1430 Stamina on fully-charged heavies). "How to regen magicka on a magicka Dragonknight with staff and dual wield" — heavy attacks on the staff bar plus Combustion from constant Burning uptime is the standard loop.

"What is a good amount of spell damage for magicka Dragonknight" and "how much physical penetration for stamina Dragonknight PvE" and "good champion point setup for a stamina Dragonknight with 1200 penetration" — penetration targets depend on the boss's resistance and your group's debuffs (Major Breach from Disintegrating Dragonfire alone is 5948). Since the correct number is a group-math problem and shifts with content, we won't publish a fixed CP page here; use a current penetration calculator instead.

PvP: why DKs feel unkillable, and how to fight them

"What makes some Dragonknights nearly unkillable while dealing massive damage in PvP?" — the stacked defensive kit. Between Green Dragon Blood's scaling burst heal, Igneous/Fragmented Shield, Wing Buffet's 50% projectile reduction, and the Corrosive Armor Ultimate (limits incoming damage to 6% of Max Health while ignoring enemy resistance), a well-built DK is very hard to pressure while still applying fire DoTs.

"What Dragonknight abilities are useful in PvP?" and "how to counter a shield-bashing Dragonknight in PvP" — control is king: Petrify/Fossilize (unblockable stun), Dark Talons (immobilize), and Chains (undodgeable pull). To fight a bash-heavy DK, avoid feeding reflects/blocks and pressure through resource drain rather than raw burst. "How to kill a Dragonknight as a Sorcerer" — projectiles are reduced by Wing Buffet, so time burst for when wings are down and use hard control they can't cheaply cleanse.

"Are Dragonknights still overpowered in PvP?" and "are Dragonknights still overpowered in PvP?" — balance rotates every patch; DK is consistently viable but 'OP' is a moving target we won't assert as permanent. "Does a magicka Dragonknight need to be a vampire to survive in PvP?" — no, vampire is a common choice for the extra recovery and undeath-style mitigation lines, but the class's own heals and shields stand on their own.

"Whats the best way to counter Zaan as a stamina Dragonknight in PvP" — Zaan is a monster-set beam that breaks on distance or line-of-sight; use your gap-closer, wings, or a pillar to break the tether, and your DoT/heal package to outlast the burn. "Can the Templar Backlash be reflected by Dragonknights?" — Backlash is a stored-damage debuff, not a projectile, so DK's projectile reduction does nothing to it; there's no class reflect in the current data.

Race, leveling, solo, and 'is it still viable'community

"Why use Dunmer for magicka Dragonknight?" and "looking for a fire Dragonknight build for a Dunmer" — Dunmer's flame-damage and resource passives synergize naturally with the class's fire kit, which is why it's the classic thematic pick. "Would an Argonian magicka Dragonknight work for PvE?" and "can a High Elf Dragonknight work?" — yes; race gives a modest edge, not a gate. Argonian brings sustain and healing, High Elf brings raw resources and damage. Pick for the role, not the class.

"How is magicka Dragonknight nowadays?" and "is stamina Dragonknight viable for PvE DPS?" — both remain playable in all content; their relative ranking against other classes moves each patch, so check a current tier list rather than an old thread. "Should I switch from stamina Dragonknight to stamina Nightblade for PvE?" — only if you dislike the DK playstyle; both hit endgame numbers, and the class gap is usually smaller than execution gaps.

"Help with cheap or craftable Dragonknight sets for solo overland" and "is there a viable PvE magicka Dragonknight build with no DLC?" — craftable sets and base-game overland/dungeon sets carry solo and no-DLC play comfortably; the class's own self-heals (Burning Embers, Dragon Blood, Cauterize) cover survivability. "How is magicka Dragonknight self-healing in PvE questing solo?" — strong, thanks to those heals plus Combustion sustain.

"Can a Dragonknight solo the spider nest world boss?" and "advice for stamina Dragonknight first Maelstrom Arena runs" — the class's DoT sustain and self-heals make it a solid soloing class; success depends on your gear level and mechanics knowledge more than the class. "How to fix my messed up max-level Dragonknight" and "how do I get my Dragonknight back on track?" — respec attributes and CP, commit to one resource identity, fix DoT uptime, and slot enough DK abilities to fuel Storm Voice, Fan the Flames, and Combustion before buying new gear.

Dragonknight rewards commitment to its identity: fire damage over time, sticky control, and self-sustaining defense. Builds and set meta rotate every patch, so treat named sets and DPS targets as snapshots and verify against a current parse guide before you regear. When in doubt, learn the passives — Combustion, World in Ruin, Fan the Flames, and The Storm Voice explain most of what makes the class tick.
