We mined 208 real questions ESO players asked about Champion Points on the official forums and grouped them by what people actually wanted to know. Where a specific number is verifiable we cite it; where it isn't public, we say so instead of guessing. This is the reference, not a build list.

The basics: what CP is and how it workscommunity

"What is Champion Points / how do champion points work?" Champion Points (CP) are an account-wide progression system that unlocks after level 50. You earn CP from most XP sources, and you spend it inside three colored constellations — Warfare (blue, offense), Fitness (green, sustain/survival), and Craft (red, utility like gathering and crafting). Each constellation has 'stars' you slot and passives you invest points into.

"How does CP progression work / how does CP work after level 50?" Before level 50 you gain normal character levels and attribute points. After 50, XP feeds into Champion Points instead. CP is shared across your whole account, so every character draws from the same pool — but each character slots its own stars independently.

"Do champion points matter before level 50?" No. You can't earn or spend CP until you hit 50, so pre-50 leveling is purely about character level and skill lines.

"How do champion points interact with new characters / how do CP affect a new character?" Your CP total is account-wide, so a brand-new alt immediately has access to your full CP pool. You still have to slot and allocate stars on that character, but you don't re-grind the points.

"Will I lose champion points on other characters if I delete one?" No. CP is stored on your account, not the character. Deleting a character does not reduce your CP total.

Earning CP: caps, speed, and the grindcommunity

"What is the max champion rank / what is the CP cap?" The cap has been raised repeatedly over the game's history, so the current ceiling depends on your patch — check your in-game Champion menu for the live number rather than trusting an old guide. Historically the system launched with CP160 as the gear-scaling milestone and the earnable cap has climbed well past it.

"What to do with champion points gained above the cap / what happens to CP earned past the cap?" Once you hit the earnable cap, additional XP no longer grants CP. There's no stored overflow to spend later — you simply stop gaining until the cap is raised in a future update.

"How to gain / farm / grind champion points fast?" The most efficient routes are repeatable, high-density XP: AoE grind spots (packed mob camps), dungeon runs, and XP-boosted activity. Enlightenment (a rested-XP style bonus that builds while you're offline) roughly doubles CP gain until it's used up, so logging in daily and burning enlightenment first is the single biggest lever.

"Best/easy way to level CP while soloing / without PvP / what class has the best AoE for grinding?" Any class with strong sustained AoE clears grind packs fast — the exact 'best' class shifts every patch, so pick whatever you can pull-and-nuke comfortably. Solo grinding, dungeon spam, and questing all work without touching PvP.

"Are quests a viable way to level CP at higher levels?" Quests give solid XP but are slower per hour than a dedicated grind pack because of travel and dialogue. They're fine if you enjoy them; they're not the fastest.

"Does the training trait make it easier to level CP faster?" The Training gear trait increases XP gain, so yes — slotting Training pieces while grinding meaningfully speeds up CP earning at the cost of combat stats.

"Is there a cost for resetting champion points?" Respeccing CP costs in-game gold, scaling with how much you're moving. It's cheap relative to a full skill/attribute respec, so experimenting is low-risk.

Does CP actually matter for DPS?community

"Are champion points the key to DPS / how do CP affect DPS / are CP making a difference?" CP contributes to DPS, but it is not the primary lever. Rotation execution, gear sets, buff/debuff uptime, and light-attack weaving matter far more. A well-played character at moderate CP will out-damage a fumbled rotation at max CP.

"How big is the difference between 400 and 810 CP / how much power creep comes from CP?" The gap exists but is modest compared to how it feels. Most of a build's damage stars are affordable well before max, and the highest tiers deliver diminishing marginal value — which is exactly why execution outweighs raw CP total.

"How much DPS should I have for my CP / what DPS should a fresh CP160 or CP213 player do?" There's no official target published per CP level, so any hard number would be invented. Practically: focus on hitting a clean rotation on a target dummy and improving over time rather than chasing a CP-indexed benchmark. If your numbers feel low, the fix is almost always rotation and uptime, not more points.

"Is X DPS good for Y CP (e.g. 20k at 300, 50-55k at 600)?" These are common phrasings, but ZOS publishes no per-CP DPS standard, so we won't fabricate a curve. Compare against content requirements (a given trial or arena) rather than against your CP number.

Where the ceilings are (the numbers that are actually public)

"How important is penetration from CP / should I put CP into penetration with a sharpened weapon / good setup for a stamDK with 1200 penetration?" Penetration only helps up to the point where it strips the target's resistance — after that it's wasted. A typical trial/dungeon boss sits around 18,200 raw resistance, and in a group the tank and healer (Major/Minor Breach, Crusher, Alkosh) usually strip roughly 8,000–9,000 of it, so each DPS only needs to cover the remainder. That's why 1,200 flat penetration plus group debuffs plus a sharpened weapon can already be near the target solo-adjusted; stacking more penetration sources on top overshoots and is dead stat weight. It's content- and group-dependent, not a fixed constant — check your group buffs before piling on more.

"How many CP in piercing equal a sharpened legendary weapon / when is it worth 100 points in a penetration node?" Penetration is penetration regardless of source; they add together toward the same resistance-stripping target. So the real question isn't 'CP vs sharpened' — it's whether your combined total (CP + sharpened + group debuffs) is at or below the ~18,200-minus-group-strip target. If you're already there, additional CP penetration is wasted.

"When is it worth putting 100 points in a crit-damage star (Elfborn / Precise Strikes-style)?" Critical damage has a hard cap of +125% total. Every source — Shadow Mundus, Major/Minor Force, sets, and CP — stacks toward that same +125%. If your crit-damage stars would push you past the cap, those points are wasted; if you're under it, they're valuable. Base crit damage is +50% (a crit hits for 1.5× before modifiers), so you have +75% of headroom to fill from all sources combined.

"657 crit ≠ 657%" — "how does crit chance from CP work?" Critical rating and critical chance are different things: roughly 219 crit rating equals 1% crit chance, everyone starts at a base 10% chance, and about 21,912 rating equals the full 100%. There's no hard cap below the natural 100%, so crit-chance stars help until you're near-guaranteed to crit — which is why over-reading the raw rating number causes the classic confusion.

Specific stars and interactions people asked aboutcommunity

"How do CP diminishing returns work / is it worth putting 100 points in one node?" Most CP stars scale with diminishing returns — the first points in a star give more per point than the last. That means spreading across several strong stars is often better value than maxing a single node, unless that node has a threshold effect you specifically want.

"How do I unlock the second tier / why can I only pick tier 1 perks?" Higher-tier slottable stars unlock as you invest enough points into that constellation overall. If you can only pick tier 1, you simply haven't put enough total points into that color yet — keep investing and the next tier opens.

"Is the attribute/resource increase from CP additive or multiplicative, and what's the formula?" ZOS has changed the resource-pool scaling more than once and hasn't published a clean public formula, so we won't state a specific equation. Treat the character sheet as the source of truth: allocate, then read the resulting stat change directly.

"Do CP changes show on the character sheet?" Yes — slotting and allocating stars updates your sheet immediately, which is the reliable way to verify a star is doing what you expect.

"Do proc set skills / poisons / DoTs benefit from CP and buffs?" Generally, damage-dealing effects benefit from the damage stars that match their type and category, but which stars apply to which effect (procs, weapon poisons, specific DoTs) is patch-sensitive and has changed with reworks. Verify on a dummy after any major update rather than trusting an old list.

"Which stars affect [specific ability / class skill] — jabs, sweeps, wild impulse, cleave DoTs, bash?" The honest answer to every ability-specific question of this shape is the same: match the star to the ability's damage type (flame, poison, etc.), delivery (direct vs. DoT vs. AoE), and whether it can crit — then confirm the change on your character sheet or a dummy. Because CP has been reworked and stars renamed multiple times, hard-coding 'ability X is buffed by star Y' goes stale fast.

"Is [named] CP star bugged / not working (resistance, spell erosion, damage stars)?" Bug status is version-specific and can't be verified from stable data. Check the current patch notes and known-issues list, and test the star in isolation on a dummy — that's the only reliable way to confirm.

Building for a role: DPS, healer, tank, craftercommunity

"How should I spend my CP / where should I allocate / what should I focus on?" Slot the offensive stars (blue) that match your build's damage, fill sustain and survival (green) enough to complete your content, and use utility (red) for quality of life. Beyond that, respec is cheap — test, read the sheet, adjust.

"How to calculate healer / tank CP, and how much does healer CP level matter?" There's no single formula — healers prioritize cost reduction, buff support, and survival stars; tanks prioritize mitigation and resource sustain. Healer CP level matters less than group buff uptime and resource management, so don't stress a specific number.

"How to balance health and stamina/magicka for DPS after CP100 / how much health for damage dealers?" Carry enough health to survive the mechanics of your content and put the rest into your damage resource. There's no published magic ratio, and it varies by fight, so tune to what you actually die to.

"CP for gathering nodes, deconstructing, and daily writs — is Treasure Hunter worth it?" The red Craft constellation holds the gathering, refining, deconstruction-yield, and inspiration stars. For a dedicated farming or crafting alt these are high value; for a combat main they're a nice-to-have you'll slot when not in combat content. Treasure Hunter's worth depends on how much overland farming you do — heavy farmers benefit, occasional players don't.

"Does the Tower inspiration boost affect writ inspiration?" Inspiration-boosting Craft stars increase crafting inspiration gain broadly; whether a specific star covers writs depends on the current star wording, so check the tooltip in your Champion menu.

"Are there premade CP builds / video guides for PvP red CP?" Yes, reputable class guides publish CP loadouts, and they update per patch — use one matching your class, role, and the current update version, and treat it as a starting point to tune on the sheet.

No-CP PvP: a different gamecommunity

"Is CP better than no-CP / how does battlegrounds differ from Cyrodiil no-CP PvP?" No-CP campaigns (and most battlegrounds) disable the Champion system entirely, so everyone fights on flatter footing — gear, class, and skill decide fights instead of point totals. Many players prefer it precisely because it removes the CP power gap.

"Which armor weight / how much health / is bashing worth it in no-CP?" Without CP sustain and mitigation stars, no-CP builds lean harder on gear, attribute points, and passives. Higher effective health and heavier reliance on cost management are common because you've lost the green-constellation crutch. Bashing remains a legitimate tool; its relative value goes up when everyone's damage is lower.

"Is [class] viable / overpowered in no-CP (stamNecro, stamDK, stamSorc, stamNB snipe, magDK)?" No-CP shifts the class balance because it removes the sustain and mitigation CP normally papers over. Classes with strong innate sustain and burst tend to shine; those that rely on CP to fix resource problems suffer. The specific 'best' shifts every patch, so check current no-CP tier discussion rather than a fixed answer.

"Are CP a big advantage in PvP / which passives matter in PvP / is there any point choosing PvP CP?" In CP-enabled PvP, mitigation and sustain stars do meaningfully help survivability, and the difference against someone using them well is real. In no-CP campaigns none of it applies — which is the whole appeal of that ruleset.

"Can champion abilities be disabled in veteran PvP / are CP enabled in duels?" Whether CP is active depends on the campaign or match ruleset (CP vs. no-CP), and duels follow the ruleset of where you're standing. Check the campaign type before assuming your stars are doing anything.

Content thresholds and 'do I have enough CP'community

"Should I reach level 50 / CP160 first / is CP160 the goal?" CP160 has historically been the point where gear stops scaling upward — max-level gear is crafted and drops at CP160. So reaching CP160 matters for gear itemization, but it is not a wall for doing content; you can run plenty below it.

"What CP level for veteran dungeons / trials / vMaelstrom / vateshran / can I run it at 216?" There's no official minimum CP for any of these — they're gated by mechanics and DPS/healing/tanking capability, not a point total. Players clear vMaelstrom and vateshran at modest CP with a clean rotation; higher CP makes it more forgiving but isn't required. If you're wondering whether you 'have enough,' the honest answer is that skill and gear decide it far more than your CP number.

"Does veteran Maelstrom / do enemies get easier at higher CP / how to beat 1k-CP enemies?" Enemy difficulty in PvE scales to content, not to your CP, so a fight doesn't get easier just because your number went up — your build getting stronger does. In PvP, an opponent's CP total contributes but doesn't decide fights; positioning and execution do.

"Can two players do a non-CP Imperial City dungeon?" Group-size and difficulty are set by the content, not by CP status; a coordinated duo can clear a lot, but specific dungeon requirements aren't something a CP number changes.

"What should I do at level cap besides grinding CP / is grinding CP the only way to be competitive?" No. Once past the gear milestone, chasing CP is one of the least impactful things you can do — gear farming, learning rotations, trials, and PvP all improve you more per hour than raw points. CP is a slow trickle in the background, not the main game.

Legacy questions and the meta stuffcommunity

"How does veteran rank to CP conversion work / does CP determine veteran level / is CP160 coming December 2015?" These come from the old Veteran Rank era. Veteran Ranks were removed and replaced by the CP scaling system years ago — old VR characters were converted, and questions about VR-to-CP math or 'when is CP160 arriving' are historical. On current live, only Champion Points exist.

"Where is the champion / champion level area, and where is Wheeler?" The Champion system is accessed from your in-game menus (the Champion Points screen), not a physical location — questions referencing a location or old NPC are outdated. Open the Champion menu to allocate.

"What are the new CP changes / where is the reworked system (CP 2.0) / why do passives change after other changes?" The Champion system was overhauled in the 'CP 2.0' rework, which is why older guides list stars by names that no longer exist (e.g. 'Magician'). Star names, tiers, and effects shift with major updates, so any specific star reference should be checked against the current in-game menu.

"Where to put points now that [old star] is gone?" If a guide names a star you can't find, it predates a rework. Match the intent (that star's old effect) to whichever current star fills the same role, and verify on the sheet.

"How many CP do you have / what's the median CP / what % of players have 600 CP / how many max-CP players are there?" ZOS doesn't publish player CP distribution, and we don't invent survey numbers — so we can't give a real median or percentage. Anecdotally the playerbase spans everything from fresh 50s to long-capped veterans, but any specific figure would be made up.

"Do CP increase server load / why aren't CP exposed to the encounter log / are 'jump points' a myth?" These are speculative or technical questions with no public, verifiable answer, so we won't guess. Treat rumors about hidden CP breakpoints ('jump points') as unconfirmed unless ZOS or a reproducible test shows otherwise — the verifiable stat ceilings (crit damage +125%, the penetration target, the crit-rating conversion) are the breakpoints that actually exist.

The honest summary: CP helps, but it's the least impactful thing you can grind at endgame — rotation, gear, and buff uptime matter far more, and the only truly hard breakpoints (crit damage +125%, penetration to target, crit-rating conversion) are the ones worth building around. For everything patch-specific — star names, bug status, resource formulas — trust the in-game Champion menu and current patch notes over any guide, this one included.
