We mined 202 real questions ESO players asked on the official forums about alchemy, potions and poisons, then grouped them by theme and answered the distinct ones. Where a specific number is confirmed in our data extracts we cite it; where it isn't, we answer qualitatively rather than invent a stat.

Alchemy basics: how crafting actually works

"How does combining reagents for alchemy work?" You start with a solvent (water/oil for potions, a foul-smelling solvent like Alkahest for poisons) plus reagents. The Laboratory Use passive is the key gate: it unlocks at level 15 and lets you mix up to 3 reagents at once instead of 2. Each reagent carries hidden traits; when two or more reagents in the mix share the same trait, that effect appears in the result. That's the whole engine — matching shared traits.

"How do I craft potions?" and "newbie question about alchemy": pick a solvent that matches your level, add reagents whose traits overlap, and craft. "Does the game track failed alchemy combinations?" — the game reveals reagent traits permanently once you discover them by using that reagent in a successful mix, so you learn traits by experimenting; there's no separate failed-combo log, and a mix with no shared traits simply produces nothing usable.

"Why do alchemy levels 48 and 49 have unique required materials?" and "question about low level solvents": solvents are tiered by level, and the top tier matters most. The Solvent Proficiency passive (level 50) is what lets you use Lorkhan's Tears (potions) and Alkahest (poisons) to make CP150 potions and poisons — the endgame tier. "How do potions get better with higher level?" — higher-tier solvents scale the potion's restore/effect values up, so a max-tier solvent on the same reagents gives a stronger result.

"Why doesn't alchemy have hirelings?" Unlike Blacksmithing/Clothing/Woodworking, alchemy has no hireling passive in its skill line — the six alchemy passives are Chemistry, Keen Eye: Reagents, Laboratory Use, Medicinal Use, Snakeblood and Solvent Proficiency. You gather reagents yourself, which ties into the farming questions below.

Leveling alchemy, writs and master writs

"Best way to level alchemy" / "how to power level alchemy": the alchemy line has 50 ranks and needs 3,667,895 total XP across them, and every craft grants XP whether or not you keep the result. The Chemistry passive (level 47) produces 3 extra potions or 12 extra poisons per attempt, so crafting in bulk once you're high enough is far more efficient. Discovering new reagent traits and crafting higher-tier solvents both give large XP chunks.

"Is it worth running enchanting, provisioning and alchemy writs?" and "does daily alchemy pay off?": daily crafting writs cost cheap materials and reward gold, inspiration (crafting XP), and survey maps / master writ vouchers. "Why do I get low-level rewards from alchemy writs?" and "why does my alchemy writ require items beyond my level?" usually come down to your certification/skill tier versus the writ tier — writs scale to your alchemy rank, so a partially-leveled line can hand you mismatched requests.

"Can someone help me with alchemist certification?" — you certify by talking to the writ NPC in a starter crafting hub, which unlocks the daily alchemy writ board. "Is it normal for the alchemy daily writ to be unfulfillable?" and "are alchemy surveys bugged?": occasionally reported, but the usual cause is a missing solvent tier or reagent you haven't discovered the trait on yet — check the exact combo the writ names.

"How to complete damage health poison IX master writ" / "need help completing an alchemy master writ" / "is there a pattern to master alchemy writs?": a Master Alchemy Writ (item 119696) names one specific concoction and pays vouchers on turn-in. There's no shortcut — you craft the exact potion/poison it specifies at the required tier. "Is there any benefit to provisioning and alchemy master writs?" — vouchers buy motifs, furnishing plans and improvement mats, so they're worthwhile if you already craft daily.

Farming reagents, prices and the market

"Where to farm water for alchemy" and "do alchemy plants spawn in fixed or random locations?": nodes spawn at semi-random points across zones rather than fixed coordinates, and the Keen Eye: Reagents passive (level 17) makes herbs and fungi easier to see within 40 meters — slot that first if you farm. "Do alchemy skills affect gathering?" — Keen Eye helps you spot nodes; it doesn't change yield.

"Why is bast so hard to find?" / "where can I find bast?" / "where to farm fleshfly larva" / "is there a good place to farm emetic russula?": specific reagents concentrate in specific biomes and are gated by zone, which is exactly why some feel scarce. We don't have per-reagent spawn tables in our data, so we won't invent locations — but the pattern is that DLC-zone and specialty reagents (like the Dragon-era materials) are rarer than base-game herbs.

"Why the price hike and shortage of alchemy materials?", "why are people buying cornflower and lady smock", "why do people buy columbine": these reagents carry the traits behind the most-used buffs (Weapon/Spell Damage, Health, and the tri-stat/regen combos), so demand from crafters keeps them expensive. "Which alchemy reagents should you keep or sell?" — keep the ones that make your rotation potions; sell surplus of the high-demand ones since they move fast. "Do alchemy and enchanting materials sell well?" — the high-demand reagents and rune/glyph mats consistently do.

"Is there a house with a greenhouse or farming field for alchemy ingredients?" and "are mushrooms and herbs worth adding to farm runs?": there are houses with plantable garden furnishings and homestead-style spaces, and yes — adding reagent nodes to any farming route is free value since they share the world with your other gathering. "Whats a fair price for tri-stat potions?" varies by server economy; we won't quote a number that isn't in our data.

Which potion should I use?

"Which potion should I use?" / "what potion is best for a sorcerer?" / "whats the best potion for magicka templar PvE?": the workhorse in ESO is a tri-stat that also grants offensive buffs. Confirmed examples: the Alliance Spell Draught restores Magicka and grants Major Intellect (Magicka Recovery +30%), Major Sorcery (Spell Damage +20%) and Major Prophecy (Spell Critical +2629); the Alliance Battle Draught is the Stamina equivalent with Major Endurance, Major Brutality (Weapon Damage +20%) and Major Savagery. "Is there a potion with Major Resolve?" — none of the potions in our data grant Major Resolve, so treat that as not a standard potion buff.

"Can players make tri-stat potions or poisons?" and "how to craft tri-stat potions": yes — a tri-restoration potion restores Health, Magicka and Stamina at once (the Bound Crown Tri-Restoration Potion restores 8369 Health, 7582 Magicka and 7582 Stamina and grants Major Fortitude/Intellect/Endurance). You reproduce it with the right three-reagent combo. "How do I make Lingering Health tri-stat potions?" — a Lingering Health effect is a heal-over-time trait added on top of the restore reagents; you'll need the reagent carrying that trait plus the tri-stat reagents.

"Is Essence of Immovability a good potion for PvE?" / "are immovability potions bugged?": immovability potions grant crowd-control immunity (Unstoppable), which is niche in PvE but useful against hard-hitting CC mechanics; they're better known as a PvP tool. "What is the purpose of ravage potions?" — 'ravage' effects are the negative side of a potion (a debuff on yourself), which is exactly why the next section's Snakeblood passive exists.

"Why aren't crafted potions stronger than Crown Tri-Restoration potions?" and "why do PvE players buy Crown Tri-Restoration now?": Crown/Bound tri-stat potions are convenient no-craft options with fixed high values (the numbers above), while crafted potions gain the Medicinal Use and Snakeblood advantages. "Is this a Crown Store potion?" — Bound and Crown-prefixed items in our data are store/reward potions; crafted ones use standard names.

Potion passives, glyphs, sets and champion points

"Is the Snakeblood passive worth it?" / "does anyone use the Snakeblood alchemy passive?": Snakeblood (level 43) reduces the duration of negative effects in potions by 100% when consumed — meaning the 'ravage' downside of a potion is removed entirely. For any potion with a self-debuff it's essentially mandatory. "Does alchemy passive affect Clever Alchemist?" — Medicinal Use (30% longer potion effect duration) extends the buff window; Clever Alchemist the set grants 23–675 Weapon and Spell Damage for 20 seconds on drinking a potion in combat.

"Does the Glyph of Potion Speed actually work?" — the Glyph of Potion Speed reduces potion cooldown by 1–5 seconds (for potions below the item's level), and the Glyph of Potion Boost increases beneficial potion duration by 0.5–3.6 seconds. "Does the Nourishing champion buff affect all potions?" and "do alchemy potion effects become stronger over time?": potion effects don't ramp over time; duration is what the glyphs and Medicinal Use extend.

"Which champion points affect poison builds?" / "what champion point passives affect weapon poisons?": Mighty grants Weapon and Spell Damage to Martial attacks and its description explicitly includes Poison, Disease and Bleed; Hardy reduces damage taken from those same types. "Does the Mighty champion point increase poison and flame damage?" — Mighty affects Poison but its listed types are Physical/Poison/Disease/Bleed, so Flame is not covered by Mighty. "Does the Piercing champion node increase poison skill damage?" — penetration nodes increase how much poison damage lands by reducing resistance, which we cover in the scaling section.

"Which champion points increase bow poison damage, penetration and crit?": the Warfare tree holds the damage/penetration/crit nodes (Mighty for damage, penetration stars for armor reduction), while the Craft tree's Liquid Efficiency gives a 10% chance to not consume a potion or poison on use. "Does anyone not use spell power potions in trials?" — most raiders run them for the Sorcery/Prophecy uptime, but Foresight (drinking a potion cuts healing ability cost 75% for 6s) rewards timed potion use too.

How poison damage scales

"How does poison damage work?" / "do bow poison attacks scale with weapon or spell damage?": poison damage from abilities and enchants scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage (that phrasing appears across the poison sets in our data, e.g. Defiler, Eternal Hunt, Noxious Boulder). "Do max stamina potions increase melee damage?" — indirectly: more Max Stamina raises your Weapon Damage-based scaling, which raises Stamina-morph and poison ability damage.

"Does poison and disease damage use physical penetration?" and "does reducing enemy armor increase poison damage?": poison is affected by the target's resistance, so armor-reduction (penetration/breach effects) increases the damage poison deals — yes. "How does poison resistance work?" — the Glyph of Poison Resist adds 320–3520 Poison Resistance; higher poison resistance on a target reduces incoming poison damage.

"What is Bosmer poison and disease resistance percentage?" — our data doesn't include the Bosmer racial value, so we won't state a number; treat it as a resistance passive rather than immunity. "Are mobs weaker against certain elements or poisons?" — certain enemy types (notably some undead/constructs) have elemental leanings, but there's no blanket 'poison is best' rule in the data we have.

"Does Thaumaturge work with Acid Spray and Poison Injection?" and "does the Mighty champion point increase poison?": damage-over-time and Martial-type multipliers apply to poison abilities per their descriptions — Mighty explicitly lists Poison. "How much more damage does Poison Injection do above 50 percent health?" and "does Poison Injection count as an execute?": Poison Injection deals bonus damage against low-health targets (an execute-style scaling); we don't have the exact percentage in our data, so we won't quote one.

Crafted poisons, weapon poisons and how they proc

"How to use poisons" / "how do I apply poison to a weapon?" / "how to use poisons with staves": you equip a poison to a weapon slot the same way you'd apply an enchant coating, and it fires on your attacks. "Do poisons work with staff weapons on a Templar?" and "how to use poisons with staves": yes, poisons apply to staves as well as martial weapons. "When will alchemy be able to make poisons / will crafting poisons come to console?" — crafting poisons has long been available on all platforms; the poison items list (Damage Health Poison, Cloudy Damage Health Poison, and the many draining/hindering variants) confirms the crafted catalog.

"Do poisons share a cooldown with weapon enchants?" and "do enchants and poisons proc in Werewolf form?": applying a poison suppresses your weapon enchant's proc — you get one or the other on a given hit, governed by the shared on-hit system. Per our data, all weapon on-hit glyphs share one internal cooldown (~9–10s community-reported), and Cutting Defense notes it can activate both Weapon Enchantments and Poisons — showing they run through the same proc pipeline.

"Does the Infused weapon trait affect poisons?" / "does Charged work with poisons?" / "does Charged or Infused increase poison proc chance and effects?": Charged raises the chance to apply status effects and Infused strengthens/refreshes weapon enchants — their interaction with crafted poison procs is debated, and our data doesn't confirm a poison-specific bonus, so we won't overstate it. "Can each dual wield heavy attack hit proc poison?" and "does the same glyph on both dual-wield weapons double-proc?" — no, the shared cooldown means one proc at a time, not one per weapon.

"Can alchemical poison damage proc the Poisoned status effect?" — yes; poison damage can apply the Poisoned status, and Noxious Boulder's pool explicitly 'applies the Poisoned status effect each second.' "Do weapon poisons do critical damage?" — poison damage can crit like other damage sources. "What champion points affect weapon poisons?" — see Mighty/penetration above.

Poison stacking, purging, and combat interactionscommunity

"Do poisons stack?" / "do poisons override each other on PvE mobs?" / "can more than one double-damage poison be active on a target?": as a rule, a given poison effect from a source won't stack multiple copies on the same target — a newer application refreshes or overrides rather than adding a second identical DoT. Different effects (a damage poison vs a resource-drain poison) can coexist. "Do bow poison effects stack?" and "do poison attack skills stack?" follow the same logic: distinct effects yes, identical effects no.

"Can poisons be purged?" / "can you purge poison effects?" / "how can you block a poison damage over time?": poison DoTs are negative effects and can generally be cleansed by purge abilities; the initial hit lands but the lingering DoT can be removed. Blocking mitigates the incoming hit but doesn't remove an already-applied DoT. "Is there an addon to track when I'm poisoned?" and "how do I know that I'm poisoned?" — poison DoTs show as a debuff icon on your buff bar; combat/buff-tracking addons make them clearer.

"What is affected by cost poisons?" / "question about stamina draining poisons and blocking" / "does the ravage stamina poison effect apply to dodge roll and break free cost?": resource-drain poisons like the Gold Coast Draining Poison increase the cost of the target's Stamina and Magicka abilities by 10%, which raises the cost of active abilities. "Are resource poisons additive or multiplicative with cost reduction / are resource poisons stacking now?" — they modify ability cost; our data confirms the 10% figure for the Gold Coast poison but not the stacking math, so we won't assert it.

"Do invisibility potions work in PvP?" and "where can I buy Detect potions in Cyrodiil?": invisibility from potions (e.g. the Alliance Health Draught grants Invisibility and Unstoppable for 8s) works in PvP but breaks on action; detection/stealth counters are the answer to it. "Can someone explain how detection potions work / what does the stealth detection potion do?" — detect potions reveal nearby stealthed/invisible players in a radius for the duration. "Why do spell power potions break stealth / have a delay before use?": drinking a potion is an action that reveals you, and the global potion cooldown plus animation is the delay players feel.

Poison sets, style, and named DLC poisons

"Are there any overland poison sets?" — yes: Defiler (Vvardenfell overland) and Night Terror (Stormhaven overland) both deal Poison damage on triggers. Crafted poison-synergy sets include Assassin's Guile (+4s to your alchemical poison duration), Clever Alchemist (Weapon/Spell Damage on potion use), Eternal Hunt, Legacy of Karth (enemies under your alchemical poisons take 285 Disease damage/second), and Moon Hunter (Weapon/Spell Damage when your alchemical poison fires). "Does Corrosive Armor work with poison damage bow abilities?" — Corrosive is a Dragonknight ultimate mechanic; our data doesn't detail its bow-poison interaction, so we won't overstate it.

"How do I get enchanted alchemy buffs in Stone Garden?" and "what does Arkasis's Genius do?": Arkasis's Genius drops in Stone Garden (and Blackreach) and rewards potion use — drinking a potion in combat grants you and 3 group members 1–44 Ultimate, once every 30 seconds. "What are the effects of the new Dragon alchemy materials / are there new potions using new ingredients?" — Dragon-era reagents expand the reagent pool, but our data doesn't list their specific traits, so we won't invent effects.

"Is there an outfit similar to the alchemy style?" / "is it possible to craft Gold Coast Swift Survivor Elixir?": the Hazardous Alchemy motif (Motif 91) is the thematic alchemy outfit style, learnable from chapters or by dropping from Stone Garden's final boss; equipment slots each have their own chapter (axes, bows, staves, etc.). Named Gold Coast items in our data are the Draining, Trapping, Debilitating, Enfeebling poisons and the Spellcaster Elixir — for elixir variants not listed, we can't confirm a crafting recipe.

"What do PvE players buy now / how are the new potions and poisons performing in PvP?": the meta remains offensive tri-stat potions (Sorcery/Brutality lines) in PvE and utility poisons (draining, hindering, immobilizing) in PvP, with sets like Clever Alchemist and Arkasis's Genius rewarding disciplined potion timing. Where forum debate outran the confirmed data, we've stayed qualitative rather than guessing numbers.

If you take three things away: match reagent traits (Laboratory Use lets you use 3 at once), run Snakeblood so potion downsides vanish, and remember poison scales off your higher of Weapon or Spell Damage. Where we couldn't confirm a number from the data, we said so instead of inventing one — check current patch notes before betting a build on a debated interaction.
